Humanoid creatures descended from animals

Hi All, hope you can help.

I was suddenly struck with a memory of reading (or watching, or playing) a book (or TV/film or game) where there is a world where there are humaniod creatures that evolved simultaneously into five or so races - reptiles, fish, insects, mammals and I think birds but they could have been killed off.

I am thinking that it could have been Tad Williams Otherland but I cannot find any reference to it.

If anyone could confirm what it was, or am I going mad?
 
I remember some sort of weekly/ monthly magazine/story thing that was released when I was about 10/12. It had some dark force corrupting the people of this world who were all humanoid animal races. I remember there being cards that you could collect to play a game with them. I think some boy got transported to their world.

No idea what it was called though.

EDIT:Apparently it was called "Ancestral Trail".

I am sure the main thrust of it was that they were trying to get a peace agreement but the reptiles and insects were conspiring to overthrough the others. The fish (maybe more whale like) were the most peaceful.

I think in the end it was discovered that the reptiles had killed off the bird race as the leader had the bird leader's skull.

Did I dream it?
