Hynundai 24" playing up - could it be refresh rate?

I've got a half decent Hyundai screen here, but I cant get a picture. Or rather, via d-sub I get a second long image, then nothing. Screen goes blank, but power LED is still blue. I've tried switching it on and off and leaving it, I've tried DVI, HMDI. Nothing. WHat I don't understand - why do I get an image initially.

Edit, just noticed that there is a very, very feint image, but it is only viewable from slightly above looking down. If I switch it off, and on, I get a second long image, then it goes blank. I cant change it? Any ideas what it could be.

could be the backlight inverter on it's last legs.... I may generate anough voltage for the CCFL tubes to start up, but is then unable to sustain the voltage.

Do you have a powerful torch? Is go, shine it on the screen and see if there is an image...

Hi mate, I haven't got a torch to hand but if I switch the lights on in the room and look down I can see that there is the image projected on to the screen, but its ridiculously feint. I've just tried connecting my laptop to it, and again, initially I get the image on the screen, then it fades within a split second.

The backlight tube or inverter is at fault, I'd say it's more likely to be the inverter.

If it's out of warranty, try and get hold of a another inverter, it would be best if you can get an exact replacement, but not the end of the world if you can't, it just means you have to do a bit of a bodge job.

Just a word of warning, the inverter kicks out a high voltage, over 1000v, so keep that in mind and don't do anything silly like lick it when it's powered on. ;)

EDIT: Inverters aren't hugely expensive, I've never paid more than £40 for one.

If you're careful then you'll be fine, installing CCFL case lights is just as dangerous as these use similar inverters. :) I didn't want to seem OTT with the warning but as it's high voltage it's worth being extra careful.

I've changed inverters in the past, and I measure the voltage at the CCFL connectors first, just to be on the safe side, to check there isn't a capacitor still charged. :) I can understand if you want to put it in the MM tho, they can be a pain to do.

Interesting post thanks! I'm going to sell it as it is though and take the hit, I'm not keen on ripping this apart for a variety of reasons. How much do you think it would be worth?

ebay can be handy for this, search completed items for monitors marked "spares and repairs"... I;ve seen broken monitors go for around £40-£60 depending on how damaged they are...

With selling on e-bay however, sometimes it can be pot luck if these sort of items even make the reserve... MM maybe better. I may even be interested, but Christmas is pretty much guaranteed to clear me out! :o

Finally. electrolytic capacitors should last at least 10 years... I'm guessing hyundai cheaped out which seems a bit of a shame but I'm not really surprised... :(

Disappointing isn't it. It was a pretty pricey monitor when it was new, just about £450 I believe. I will defo MM it though. I had some luck with a broken Sony laptop a while ago using the for sale section so I will try again. Someone will no doubt get a bargain.
