Hypothetical: Legitimately buying a game, backing up then selling second hand?

Consider the above scenario.

If I buy a game normally the publisher gets the revenue, should I decide later to sell second hand nobody has any qualms about that.

However if I should make a copy of that game before selling nothing really has changed. The publisher doesn't see less or more money. What's the issue?

You're still able to play it at a later date! That's the issue.

That's illegal. You cannot copy any game, DVD or music CD without express written permission from the copyright holder. Not even for personal backup purposes.
