Hi guys.

idiot I am, but i accidentally deleted the wrong series of folders off my usb hard drive. i then emptied the recycle bin.

i immediately realised what i'd done, and have had no activity on that drive whatsoever.

what should be my first point of action to recover what i deleted?

If your using windows 7 there is n option im the folder properties. As long as you havent left it too long you should be able to revert the folder to a previous time.

Only (free) recovery program I've used successfully is TestDisk :

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

Takes a loooong time to scan a 2TB drive, but it was worth it to recover ~2TB of data (99% recovery rate). Just make sure you run it as Admin, or you'll have to repeat the whole scan/recovery like me.

NB I had deleted the Master Boot Table (by starting to format the wrong drive ), making most "simple" undelete/recovery methods impossible. I'm guessing these would work for you and be quicker, as long as the MBT is intact.
