"i am willing to work more than 48hours"

Take it for granted? It's not like anyone forced you to join the RAF, you could've got a 9-5 job if you wanted to :p

Even if it was as simple as you put it, it still wouldn't take away from the fact that just over 9 hours a day is far from extreme which was the only point I was trying to make....

I was asked to sign this in my current job. I couldn't see any benefit to me so I didn't sign it.

im guessing no overtime they would pay you aint it? i personally dont want to work overtime for free. but thats just me.

dont mind working a bit longer then normal on some days when a deadline needs to be made but not often and in practice, a well organised IT project should not come to that stage where you got to work stupid hours to get it done.

There's got to be a line somewhere though. 48 hours a week IS a lot.

In the UK we're used to, if we're honest, working too much. We put more hours in that most places on average.

For a 'joe job', more than 48 hours a week is definitely too much. I'll put more than that in if I need to, but it's worth it for me, if I was a minimum wage type, why would I? tbh though even if I work six days, which I do if I need to (I did this week) I'm still below it. I get the day back as well (and if I don't get it back, my boss will ring me up and tell me off for not getting it back, and make sure that I do - I'm salaried). Work life balance in this country is complete crap for a lot of people.

It's right that this is in place. Don't want to do it, don't sign it, and you're not able to be abused about it. If you're happy with it, sign it, work as many hours as you want.

It's fair.

Its a con. The opt out was put in there to help UK employers abuse their staff. Pretty much at our work place, if you don;t opt out you don;t get the job. If you drop out of the opt out you will never get a payrise again so that person ends up leaving.

I really wish our government had had the balls to remove the opt out when they said they were doing it.

48 hours per week on average is enough for anybody IMO.

no thanks I want my overtime and is one of the reasons the UK has it.

Thats fine if you get paid overtime. I am lucky in my job, I refused to sign the 48 hour opt out and stick to my guns and although my boss hates it, I am good enough for the 48 hours or less I work, he can;t afford to do without me.

However the other managers signed the opt out and are salaried and often work 60+ hour weeks for no extra pay. In fact my boss once tried to give a manager a contract where his working hours were 67.5 hours per week until I informed him he couldn;t and it was illegal so he changed it to 48 but "forced" the guy to opt out and he does 67.5 hours per week.

If a company does such things there are things you can do especially if it's a large group of you. Salaried non paid overtime is often part of the check box for your yearly pay and bonus. So people are willing to do some unpaid overtime.

No, your choices are put up with it or leave. Like I said I am lucky and refused to toe the line. However, I am the longest serving employee having been there 8 years. In that time I have seen all my fellow managers change every year or two.

My boss will never change though because he always finds a replacement easily enough when one of the other manages leaves after realising that he is been abused. And as long as there are willing candidates he never will change.

Whats the rules with recruitment agencies forcing people to sign this document there threat unless they sign in it they will pass job to polish workers don't start a political debate on this except are they allowed to do this?

Company I work for employs agency staff many are polish, english workers have complained of being threatened if they don't sign 48hr document

How much extra pay should employee A get compared to employee B, when employee A has signed up to the opt-out and employee B has refused ?

Note - I do not mean how much extra overtime should they get offered - assuming that is even legal - I mean base salary difference. E.g. employee A should get an hourly rate of £10.50 / hour while employee B should get £10 / hour OR employee A should get £21000 / year while employee B should get £20000.

Get proof then whistle blow to either the local newspapers or Daily Mail / Sun. It will be interesting to see which position of those tabloids - racist or anti-worker - wins out ;O)

That's upto you and how you think it'll affect your job.

Personally I always sign it, your still only contracted to do what ever your contract says. but if the overtime is on offer and I want to do it, then I can, also I can always opt back out if I so wish. I personally can't see any downside to signing it.
