I bought a lemon.

Also note that the credit card company us liable for the whole value of the car and not just the amount paid on it.

Edit: should have read the whole thread. Well done for getting it sorted.

Well the good news is that it isn't a lemon any more. After weeks of phonecalls and a few raised voices the dealer agreed to take the car back and sort out the problem. They had it 3 weeks, and I picked it up today - problem finally gone, smooth gear change, no issues at all. Turns out the problem was a worn bearing in the gearbox, I have a copy of the repair bill for my records which shows an £80 part and over £600 labour - so it was no simple repair by the looks of things!

Cheers for the advice and help guys, I've finally got the car I paid for :)

what happened about the repair from another garage that didnt fix it, did you manage to avoid paying anything more for that ? and did you get your £150 back ?

Good question :)

Basically I've agreed to give them £100 to cover the cost of the unnecessary work, so basically yes I'm down on the deal, but I keep the local garage happy and I get to keep using them for my yearly MOT and servicing.

in addition to the £150 you'd already handed over ? :(

look at it this way, you've now got a half reconditioned box. don't abuse it! :p

and it will probably now outlast the use of the car.

sucks, but thats the luck of motoring sometimes.

even if you do end up paying the £100 thats not so bad. Worth it to get it all behind you and to have the car all sorted finally.

Exactly fella, the relief at getting the problem finally sorted after 3 months - definately a very small price to pay.
