OMG thats like... 530i Sport money.
Exactly....And to think I was consiering spunking more than that on a 330i!

Does anyone have a breakdown of the costs of owning an M5?

Obviously at 23 (2yr NCB) insurance would be the biggest stumbling block....

i was also tempted last year when i found a nice 2001 M5 before i got the second TT.

They are so cheap because anyone that can afford to run a M5 can afford to buy a new/newer one.

My friend has a similar one, he's just renewed the warrenty for nearly 2k.

That says something about the running costs. ;)

heavy, highly tuned saloon car.
engine problems aside you have enough wiring in the car to go around the world eleventy jillion times, gadgets on top of gadgets all waiting to go wrong.
insurance costs won't be THAT bad, even the fuel economy isn't the biggest worry, it's when things break (and they will) that will have your bank manager in tears.

If you had the attitude to run it into the ground and not care if the electric ashtray opener starts to play up I think it'd be a good buy.

Iam guessing the real trouble is when engine management causes it to be in limp home mode because a sensor has failed and you've no idea which one

anything in particular?

insurance for me is £3k. (25yrs,, 2yrs NCB, 9 points)
petrol 13-14 mpg in town. 20-25mpg on motorway.

service every 12k approx.

oil
inspection 1
oil
inspection 2

and then back to the start again.

from a BMW dealer they are about
oil - £300
inspection 1 - £800
inspection 2 - £900

independent
oil - £250
inspection 1 - £600
inspection 2 - £700

just had rear pads done on mine and OEM parts were £130 or thereabouts for the pads alone.

tyres are 275/35 18 rears and 245/40 18 fronts as standard. look on mytyres for prices.

dont expect to get much life out of the rears if you use the power. typically mine last about 8k and fronts 14k.

MAFS and Vanos. i dont know exact costs, but think 3 zeros attached.

also the pixels on the OBD display sometimes go - not cheap.

i am sure beepcake will be along soon to fill in any gaps.

that one is particularly cheap because of colour and lack of satnav :)

unlikely there are many people that will spend that kind of money with a view to the car being worth zip when they come to sell it.
buyers who don't think that amount of money is a big deal would be typically spending a larger sum in the first place.

It would be stupid to buy an M5 at my age.
