Hello,

I'm not quite certain about the functions of an airport express.

I have a laptop (w7) which is connected to the internet via a wired connection to a wired-only router.

here are my questions:
music:
1. Can I stream music to an airport express via wireless n from my laptop? Or would I need a wireless router in order to do that?

2. Can I stream music to an airport express via a wired ethernet connection from my laptop > router > airport express?

actually. it's an access point right? So if I connect an ethernet cable to it from my router it'll give me a wireless network right?

Yes to all 3, I think :)

I have the AP disabled but use the optical out to stream music to my Hifi wirelessly via iTunes on a PC.

Indeed :)

Just plug it into your router, fire up Airport Utility, have it set up a new wireless network, enable AirPlay, plug into hifi, unplug laptop from router and connect the wifi (if you want to ;)). Fire up iTunes and stream away :)

I used to (and will again once I'm done decorating) have mine plugged into the zone 2 on my amp, so I could stream to my good stereo speakers while still getting sound from the PC/Xbox/whatever on the 5.1.

Ace, thank you.

You say un plug my laptop from the router. Would it be a problem having my xbox and laptops plugged in to the router? Would I have two clashing networks? As good as wireless g is I'm sure cat5e is probably faster (despite all of this being in the same room) so I think I'd rather have that as well (although not the end of the world if I can't I guess).

By the way, is there a certain time of day that the mac refurbished store gets updated? I'll look either for a used one or a refurbished one I think.
