I gave in and bought the Orange Box

Okay so despite the fact that in my opinion I should be given a further discount for already having bought Ep1 and HL2, I went ahead and bought the Orange Box :cool:

I saw portal on the xbox 360 yesterday and that just pushed me over the edge - although I chose to buy it on PC because I think TF2 will be much better on PC than 360 :) Plus there's the whole mod thing on PC and I'm a lot better with mouse & keyboard than I am with a gamepad.

A bit of trouble with payment - paypal took my money, steam tried to process the transaction, then gave me an error saying something along the lines of "It broke. Sorry." :p But literally 45 seconds later I have the games in my account, so it's all good and faith in steam is restored ;)

Point in this thread? I dunno. Just tell me I made a good purchase because I'm a tightwad :p
 
My theory is the Black box (ep 2, portal and TF2) would have been the same price as the orange box is now. Some marketing bod at valve then pointed out no mug would buy the orange box because if they hadn't discovered HL2 by now they probably never would, so they ditched the black box and lowered the price of the orange box thus making hl2 and ep1 'free' to give away.

No extra cost to us, and it makes other people who would have never actually played HL2 get addicted and buy the orange box, pass on their gifts... it goes on indefinitely. Everyone wins.
 
That's a pretty good theory, Streeteh..! Wouldn't surprise me if you're totally right there.

Sorry DirtyJester - girlfriend has already claimed it from me :p I still have a HL2 one up for grabs, but I need to see if anyone I know in real life wants it, first!

Couldn’t agree more. All the moaning about HL2 and Episode 1 have done my head in, forget it, just look at the 3 great games you are getting for the price of a normal game!!

And yes, you made a good purchase! :D
 
Yeah to be frank the £26.68 or whatever it cost me is about what I would have expected to pay for Ep2, TF2 and Portal anyway, even without HL2, EP1 and Lost Coast thrown in as well. Bear in mind I'm not fussed about TF2 (or any modern multiplayer FPS), and wasn't all that impressed by Portal, but I still don't feel ripped off.

Bit of a shame more of the back catalogue wasn't included (maybe HL:Source or one of the multiplayer mods).

Episode 3 will be out before the end of the year. I wonder if valve will be selling it seperately or creating another box set?
 
I too gave in and bought the orange box last week.

I own half life 1 and its expansions aswell as Halflife 2 and even though i own them i am in no way a fan.

Really only bought it for TF2 after all the raving from from ppl on here. I know i could buy it on its own but you have to say the orange box is a good deal. I bought TF2 blind, without playing a demo or viewing any videos and i must say that it is one fantastic game.
So glad i did it.
 
^originally I'm sure they were, back when the plan was to be releasing a new episode every 6-9months. But it now seems they are taking about 18months over each episode.

Sounds about right, with 1 extra bit. They were thinking of dropping the orange box, and dropping in free hl2 and ep1 in the black box. But, someone pointed out that black packaging is boring, and Orange sounds much more fun and works on all the marketing material nicely.
