I got rear ended today, at 1350 on an icy road.

Driving conditions were poor with the residential road being icy. So I decided to drive slowly. I slowed down at a junction to give way, but the person behind me must have been going too fast and skidded into the behind of me.

My car jolted forward and the N/S/F wheel hit the curb at low speed. Tracking was already slightly out on the car before the collision.

The rear bumper seems to be the only component of the car that took little damage. There is a small dent and a scratch.

I nor the passenger suffered no injuries so none of that LOL CLAIM WHIPLASH £££££££.

I took his contact details, registration and images of the incident. There were no witnesses (unless my mum who was passenger counts as a witness?)

Questions:
1. Does my mum who was a passenger count as a witness?
2. Since I'm not fussed at the damage do I need to proceed further?
3. How can I make sure everything in my car is mechanically okay?
4. If I did decide to claim for my bumper will it effect my no claims or next year's insurance premium?
5. Any further advice?

Thanks :)

Don't think so. Has to be impartial

not if you don't want to....

3. How can I make sure everything in my car is mechanically okay?
Take it to a garage. Your boot floor might be bent

4. Any further advice?
Don't rub another man's rhubarb

1. No as she's not a neutral witness, she'll obviously side with you.
2. No you don't have to inform the insurance if you don't want your car repaired.
3. Get someone who knows cars to take a look at it, preferably a mechanic? :p
4. Not from me ;)

erm IMO other parties fault so it wont affect your no claims. id say report it to your insurer and give them the details of the third party and get the car checked out/tracking done all paid for via their insurance

You dont need to take it any further if you dont wish though legally speaking you must inform your insurer ;)

Your Mum is not a witness.

youd contact their insurer to report the incident and claim for your rear bumper. id be more interested in getting the tracking sorted though

if you claim through their insurer, there is no effect on your NCB

ps youll need some compo otherwise youll never get accepted to appear on jeremy kyle

If he mentions it to his insurance don't they mark him down as having had a shunt and will put his premium up next year?

Correct but we cannot advise him to do anything but this as he is contractually obliged to notify them.

Now he knows what he needs to do its his decision when he does it ;)

I too got rear ended today :( Though the silly bint didn't have icy roads as an excuse, "did it make a bang? I didn't hear because of my music" ... her words about sum it up.

Luckily I can't see any damage to my bumper (I'd stopped at a mini roundabout and she was doing a very slow speed thankfully!) but I'm gonna take it to my usual mechanic tomorrow and see if he can have a quick look to be safe before I text her to give it the all clear.

I'd suggest you get it checked over before not proceeding any further should you so wish, for peace of mind if nothing else!

If everything seems fine, see if they'll give you cash for the cost of the inspection and getting your alignment done in exchange for keeping the insurance out of it.

Just come from the mechanic. He said it only needs a new rear bumper and alignment. He said he'd be suprised if they wrote it off just for them two (X Reg Focus).

How good are HelpHire?

I've been specifically leaving plenty of space in front to drive into when at a stop and watching behind me like a hawk when someone is approaching. Simply don't trust other people's driving ability.

How reasonable was the other party?

I only ask as in the past my brother has had a couple of accidents, not gone through insurance as it was minor damage. He paid for it himself and the other guy was happy at that with no compo mentioned.

If your situations were reversed would you prefer not to go through insurance and just pay to have the other guys car fixed?

As for helphire, they will rape the other guys insurance. In the end it pushes up everyones premium.
