I guess I'm not missing much?

Right now as long as you have a reasonably clocked quad+ from AMD or Intel, there seems little reason to upgrade.

For a fresh build though, Sandy Bridge seems like the obvious choice if spending over £100 on a CPU. Even the i3-2100 is very impressive for the money - especially if gaming.

The OP would gain much better gaming performance by adding another 6970 than can be had from a cpu upgrade.

If the OP had 2 or 3 fast cards already then he would gain some fps with a overclocked Sandy at 4.5 or higher over a i7 at 4 gig.

Easyrider, you've gone soft! :p

The only two upgrade strategies which make sense - the Easyrider Method and the Muel Method. Either wait until it's on its last legs, or upgrade immediately and sell your old stuff before it depreciates (that used to be the Easyrider method anyway..)

Maybe? But I doubt I will see much improvement and I really CBA to upgrade and reinstall my rig its running very nice at the moment. :p

Plus it would cost me 200 odd quid after selling my mobo and chip.

Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £263.99

I would get 150 maybe for my D0 i7 and maybe 70 for the P6T I would also have one stick of DDR3 left over too as I am currently running 6GB triple channel.

As a small aside Easyrider, aren't you forgetting your loyal member free postage? That does bring the price down by £9.50 ^_^

I made the change to SB last week and sold my 920 kit off. It's best to sell it as a bundle though I find, ended up getting a lot more than I would have if I'd sold it all separately. You're assuring the buyer it's all compatible so I think they're willing to pay the extra :p

How much did you get and what was the outlay for SB?

Is it much faster? I guess you only have 4GB ram now?

Worth it in real terms? or not?

The new Sandy Bridge stuff cost me around £460, sold my X58 stuff (including the ram) off for £360 and then sold the lost planet 2 code off for a tenner :p

All in all the outlay was around £80-£90, can't remember the exact amount.

For that £80-£90 I've gained an extra 2GB of ram (bought 8GB Geil), clocked my cpu higher to 4.6GHz, temps are a lot lower on load @4.6 (you're talking 13c less than what my 920 @4GHz was), this motherboard posts a lot quicker than my ud3r so I can now see the point in buying an ssd (ordered a C300 128GB) and above all I got to play with some new toys! Overall it was worth the outlay to me.

In terms of real performance I haven't done enough testing to see. I've mainly just been making sure my overclocks stable and lowering voltages, etc. I've done a bit of gaming however and I have witnessed better minimums in cpu dependent games such as source based games. Games like bad company 2 that I also play are too gpu dependent for me to tell.

I was happy with the performance of the 920, no doubt about it. However, it's for the reasons I mentioned above why I changed, so if you're not bothered about those reasons, it's probably not worth the switch :p

Tempted

But I just CBA to swap out and reinstall :p

If you're happy we've what you've got, with post times, temps, etc I'd say keep it mate :)

I wasn't and really wanted an ssd drive, so I changed, however I still had the staff at ocuk going round in circles. I think I sent about 3 or 4 contradictory webnotes saying I'll cancel, I'll keep it, I'll cancel, I'll keep it.....

is there a quick boost for my system atm with my current set-up ? ( in sig )

ive added a low profile 5570 to that as well

os is w7 btw 64 bit

FWIW I Didn't reinstall when I went from X58 to SB.

Just did my usual of switching to the Microsoft HDD drivers before pulling the hardware out.

Only thing with this is if you're overclocking, you don't want any potential extraneous factors getting in the way, such as driver related bsods. That's just me though. I always like a blank canvas to work on ;)

It won't load drivers for something that isn't there. Its suited me fine for every mobo change I've done in the last few years on every rig I worked on. Was on 4.2Ghz i7-920 and now 4.6Ghz 2600K :)

Only BSODs I get are when pushing past the limits of the hardware in my hands at the time.

Nice one. I'll have to bear that in mind with any future motherboard changes then. Cheers bud :)
