Hi, at the moment i have a Zyxel 660HW and I hate it. its caused me nothing but hassle since i got it so im looking to replace it.

ive been thinking of a number of options

A) Buy a cheap old PC with 2 NICs, a Ethernet modem, and hope the Zyxel will cope with acting as a switch and wireless access point

B) Buy a new standard ADSL Router. (which one i dont know)

C) Buy a linksys WRT54GL and wack on DD-WRT (would also need a ethernet modem for this too - ive been recomended the D-Link DSL-300T)

The solution is required to support 4/5 pc with a mixture of wireless and wired connections. connected to ADSL MAX at 8mb speeds. there will be a lot of data moving about the internal network and on the WAN.

Thanks

What about a Netgear DG834G, probably the most popular ADSL router used on here. I used to have one when I was on ADSL, worked flawlessly and looks undoubtedly better than the Linksys imo :)

that would be a solution for option B.

however at home i have a DG834GT and its great other than the fact it doesnt support WOL over the internet. i assume the DG834G also doesnt support this... i could like without WOL but would prefer not to.

Option B is supposed to be "Buy a new standard ADSL Router. (which one i dont know)"
sorry

Wake On Lan. so i can turn my PC on anywhere in the world, and then RDP in.

Been looking at the Billion 7404VGO but i cant find any reviews for it.

Triad2000, what would you get then?

If you want quality I would buy a Draytek. I will only use them for our ADSL Routers at work where I require QOS for our VOIP and for our VPNs. These are not cheap units but you do get what you pay for.

I am sorry if this breaches the forum rules btw.

Right, ive decided against all the complicated options and im going to get a standard ADSL router. As im getting a new router i thought id get a VoIP one and give that a go.

shortlist:

Billion 7404VGO ~£120 inc del
Draytek Vigor 2800VG ~£150 inc del

what are peoples opinions of these two. from my (lack of) experiance Draytek are supposidly (one of) the best, but is it really worth the extra £30 and i would loose out on the PSTN fallback facility on the Billion.

Thanks

The Billion's pretty decent, and personally I'd avoid Draytek (mostly based on their habit of listing features that don't work, that disappear in new firmware upgrades, or just never exist, and the fact that their support have as much intelligence as a dead chicken).

A common problem with these home type routers it that they don't allow you to create many custom services (tcp ports) and have many rules. Not sure what the Billion or Draytek allows in terms of custom ports and rule numbers, though.

I have found my Draytek's at work very flexible on their routing tables. My Billion at home is shortly to be consigned to the bin.

I don't see why average Joe home user would be particularly bothered about having a particularly flexible routing table 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0 -> ADSL Wan port (or whatever) would be sufficient for most peoples needs.

What Billion do you have? and why is it going in the bin?
