I'm thinking of build a new pc.
I want to be able to run a few games and 3DS max with ease.
Using Crysis and Supreme commander on highest settings as benchmarks.

So far I have selected the following components I just want someone to point out any mistakes I'm making or if I can get similar/better components for less money etc.

I've only chosen CPU, GPU and Motherboard so far

Motherboard: Asus P7H57D-V EVO Intel H57 Express 1156 Motherboard £127.57

CPU: Intel CPU i5 750 Quad Core Processor £152.93

GPU: Nvidia 9800GT (Gainward) £80.90

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Depending on your resolution, the 9800GT is really going to struggle running Crysis on the highest settings. What is your budget for the build and what items do you already have ie a monitor?

Edit - Going by the price of the bits you have chosen so far id go for something along the lines of:

Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156) - Retail
Asus P7P55D-E Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard
Corsair Dominator 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
OcUK Value GeForce GTX 460 768MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM
Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply
Silverstone SST-PS03B Precision Midi Tower Case - Black
LG GH22NS50 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM
2x Akasa AK-191-SM Smoke Ultra Quiet 120mm Fan - 3 pin

Approx £675

Plus a better heatsink if you intend to overclock.

Ah. Ok. I havn't been on top of PC hardware for some time and last time I was "on top" the 9800GT was a top of the range card.
I wanted to go for SLi too. Thus my choice of motherboard.

I have a Samsung 32 inch HD TV I was thinking of using for a monitor.
A case and about 3208617512986213 powersupplies to chose from that I've accumilated over the years.

my budget will be around £700 but I'd like to spend as little as possible obviously because I'm a uni student and thus poor.

Thats fine as long as the PSU is decent and offers enough power connectors providing its not a cheap generic PSU. As SLI is going to use a higher wattage and so put more strain on the PSU, and you don't want to break new hardware if the PSU goes. What wattage and make/model of PSUs do you have?

If you want SLI something like:

Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156) - Retail
Asus P7H57D-V Evo Intel H57 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard
Corsair Dominator 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit

Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM
LG GH22NS50 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM

Approx: £740

is sli/crossfire possible with a H57 chipset motherboard.

because that's honestly the first time I have heard that.

edit, a quick check of asus website shows 8X/8X so it does, which is good to know.

Apparently so, tbh ive not used a H57 mobo but stuggled to spec a decent 1156 mobo with SLI plus SATA 6Gb/s and USB 3.0 to give a bit of future use.
