Ok it's getting cold now and I'm getting cold when I go out... but none of the shops seem to have any decent winter coats! The range seems to be almost exclusively thin polyester mix 3/4 length coats for £120, what's all that about? Where have all the good coats gone?

I'm quite slim but wide shouldered and most of them look too big in the body. Not necessarily looking for a smart coat, just one that's toasty warm. Where can I look? Highstreet preferable, but tried most of the big names except Blacks so far. Price not too important if the right one comes up and is warm enough. Would prefer not to look like a rambler too ;)

I got a warm Northface jacket with zip in fleece for about £120, and it's wery warm :) Might not be to your tastes though - Depends if you like trendy or functional.

It was from a hiking / climbing shop, 'go outdoors' or something like that.

The Berghaus coats are also good, but the local chavs started buying them so I didn't :p

So you're looking for a full length trench coat type thing?
Well I was thinking a bit like those long thick quilted coats you see them wearing at the arctic ideally, I saw some shops selling something like that in Prague but where the hell would you get them over here? Obviously I don't need one quite so extreme, nor do I need the boots or crampons :D

Hey, I said crampons, not tampons ;)

I've got an upper/mid thigh length, wool/cashmere mix coat from Guess which is pretty warm. I have no idea what it's called but it was about £230 last winter so probably replaced by this year's product line anyway.

I've also got a Rab Guide Glacier goose down jacket, it's years old now but the warmest thing I've ever worn. My gf just doesn't like me wearing it because I look like the Michelin man, if it gets cold enough I don't care what I look like tbh.

Those are down jackets :) you can get them in most outdoors shops, brands like Mountain Equipment and Rab would be my choice as they are British and do ranges from ultra-lightweight to full arctic. :)

I just picked myself up one of those long black coats (type that doormen wear) for like £40 although it does look quite formal. Also have some sort of leather jacket with wool on the inside, warmest thing I got although can't even remember where I got it from.

I have the same problem. Bought a duffel last two years can't really go wrong with them.

Waiting until sales though as the duffels are so big they usually get slashed come boxing day.

Ringspun off ASOS.

Looks the business over my workstuff, fits well around the body, and is very wlel made. £69 in the sale last year.

Why not buy a thin coat and selotape lots of your tampons inside it to make a lovely insulated warm place! Just don't get it wet

It sounds like you are on about a Down jacket. I've got a couple - one Rab Active jacket which is quite bulky although not overly so and a Haglofs Lim Down vest which is very light and extremely warm (and I like it's looks). They are the warmest kind of jackets and you can generally get away with just a tshirt and the jacket. You can look a bit like the Michelin man but just go to a shop and try some on, they don't all make you look huge and you can laugh at all the people in standard jackets freezing their backsides off.

The North Face Nuptse is a mega popular (if not overly spectacular) down jacket and you can get it from pretty much any outdoor shop. North face stuff is always popular on the high street if you are worried about that sort of thing.

Alternatively just get a nice thick wool jacket which are generally warm enough with layers and absorb water a lot better than down (which loses its warmth with water abuse).

Another type of jacket you can look at if you are after an outdoory type is a primaloft jacket: it's designed to be similar to down jackets but doesn't lose as much warmth when it's wet. I have a Rab Photon Hoody which is very warm and generally can get away with that and a jumper on some of the coldest days.

Have you given asos.com a go? I bought mine from there about 2 years ago for about £50 reduced from £120 and it's still great. They have a great range so give it a try :)

A down jacket as said sounds what like you want. You could also take a look in some snowboarding shops as you'll find some very warm jackets in there, you won't look like a rambler but it still might not be a look you want.

Next, M&S (Autograph range has some nice coats, or did last year), fat face (just bought brother a thick warm jumper from there), house of fraser etc.

Expensive but yeah that would probably do the job nicely. Helps that it has the Hyvent waterproof outer although I've never had my down get so wet that it was a problem before and I'm from Aberdeen!

The only thing that would worry me is that maybe it was too warm :D, down is warm enough by itself without sticking another sheet over the top of it. You may find that you sweat like a ***** due to more or less zero breathability in the jacket.

It's something I considered. Trouble is what I use it for. Early morning long commutes then late night return, so a very cold walk then the long train journey involves stripping everything off :D
