I need help finding an online shooter

Apart from the odd demo I have only played 3 online shooters so I am looking for a bit of advice on choosing one.

I did enjoy BF2 but the server list eventually drove me insane in that it was so laggy and the net code did not seem that stable for me. I also played Red Orchestra I did like the realism but too many of the maps just became tank battles and graphically it’s looking old. I played TF2 for the first time last night and will probably continue playing now and again.

I am seriously thinking about getting quake wars which scored well in reviews and I enjoyed the demo. For me it is also very stable and the server lists and net code work great on my setup. I am having doubts due to allot of posts I have read about players not liking it, but for which reasons I do not know. People may not like it for the very same reasons that would appeal to me.

I have not been able to play UT3 demo online because the @ key is bound to the console and therefore I am unable to setup an account because every time I enter my email the console comes up - I am sure there is a way round it. I played against bots and the game runs well on my setup and is impressive overall, but is not really my thing as I am not a big fan of death match and twitch type shooters. It looks and runs so great that I may get it anyway.

-I am looking for something with:
-Large and small maps with and without vehicles (not overpowered)
-Tactical
-No bunny hopping if that's possible
-Graphically looks good
-A reasonably mature community (team killing kiddies)
-Team based

I hope I am not asking for too much

Copy and paste the @ from notepad, or redefine the console key in UTInput.ini. Although, if you're looking for a 'tactical' game then UT3 might not be quite what you're looking for. It pretty much fits the rest of your requirements though.

The Battlefield games are about a close to your requirements as you can get. The rest will fail most if not all of the following 'Tactical', 'No bunny hopping if that's possible', 'A reasonably mature community (team killing kiddies)' and quite possibly 'Team based' aswell.

Project reality mod to BF2 address them all though.
I detest the laggy BF2 server list and the netcode is not that great. Mind you the last time I played was over a year ago. I played the demo of Quake Wars and it felt similar to BF2 and ran extremely well on my setup. What is wrong with it as I hear allot of guys saying they don't like it but they hardly ever give a reason.

I will reinstall BF2 and the Project Reality. I am at work so I have limited access to sites so I would like to know what the mod does apart from the obvious make it more realistic. Are there new maps?

New maps, weapons, totally different style of play. Much more emphasis on teamwork, more mature fan base. Games can last over an hour.

Still have to suffer the laggy BF2 server list, but there's only a small selection of PR servers, so you don't have to scroll through hundreds to find a good game.

Battlefield series fails at "tactical" and "mature community" aswell as "team based"
When I say tactical and mature I really mean as much as possible for an open online game. I sort of go through phases of online gaming like when you have great nights and you think, wow this is the best thing ever. Then you get a couple of nights and you find games with only idiots playing and that’s what put me off playing for a year. I don't mind bad players or accidental team kills which I never punish. I must admit I am not the greatest player but I do try to play by the rules. It's the idiots whom are trying to purposely ruin the game.

Tactically on a good night BF2 did just fine by me. Talking about BF has the server and net code been improved for BF 2412.

Could be the one for you. One thing Minstadave missed was the graphics are improved, better textures, much longer view distances etc.

If for some reason you don't like PR, hang on a bit longer for Crysis. The power struggle game mode may be something you'd like

UT3 demo does no validation on your email other than to check it's not blank. You can type anything and it works :)

ed: actually I was rather unimpressed with the UT3 interface overall. Seems a bit clunky in places and the server browser is pretty bad compared with older versions.

Was rather unimpressed with UT3 full stop, felt a bit 'late 90's' for me.

'OMGZ bunny hopping LOLZERS!!!!111!'

Was expecting a Mr Hankey screen saver to greet me when I quit back to Windows...

Not all UT3 players are immature, you will get that in every online game.
I'm turning 28 next week, and it's the one game that I can see myself playing for a few years on, at least till I turn 30 (if 04 is anything to go by :) )

Have you tried BF2142?

Bf2142 smaller infantry maps are excellent. Jeeps and Walkers but they can be dealt with or avoided so no problems. Bunny - hopping to an extent is in the game though heh

Is the browser an improvement over BF2 and graphically how does it compare. I would still be playing BF2 but the browser does my head in. I have no idea why they never fixed it. Oh, and while I'm at it do the weapons sound good.

Weapons are great - Each class has something good about it. And each is a different style of play with different rewards

Medic/Assault - gun whores and revive whores
Engineer - vehicle, jeep and walker killers
Support - ammo and spam suppliers and experts plus infantry sonar heh
Recon - Sniper eagles and recon ghosts(camouflage) also heavy explosives

The browser is fine i guess - ive not played BF2 really so i cant compare.

One thing EA is finally fixing with the new patch coming soon is "saved weapon loadouts" At the moment you have to choose all your weapons every time you join a server when it would be easier to load a preferred loadout.

I would say in bf2142 its more about infantry combat and the vehicles are a bonus or tactical edge (on the infantry conquest maps)

Weapons sound fine. Try a demo of it perhaps?

Yes, the browser is an improvement. It has favouites again but it also automatically remembers your server history. Has a friends list so you can see who's playing and you can instantly connect to their server.

Never heard of anyone so bothered about a browser though . I've played hundreds of hrs of BF2, and a minute fraction of that is browsing servers.

BF2142 weapon sounds and sound in general I think are fantastic with X-fi and EAX effects.

Maybe, try the demo but it's only basic weapons and no other unlocks and it's on a less popular level compared to what is commonly played. E.g Cerebre Landing and Tunis Harbour

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 wins all round. Tactical, team based, good community, looks and plays great and no bunny hopping. There don`t seem to be many fannys on the servers either because the game isn`t exactly easy so no quick fix.
