Now I know we're in trouble.

My local Shell garage... the cheapest petrol station I've seen around here... is now sporting 93.9p/litre for Unleaded and 99.9p for Optimax.

The usual £40 doesn't even fill the tank. Last time I put £40 in, the tank was full to the brim by £39.89. :(

You drive a rover. Why the **** are you putting optimax in it?
I guess its the uber performance? :p

Oh yeah, I raced a Porsche Cayenne Turbo, BMW M5 and Metro 1.1 during my lunch hour... pwned the lot of them :p

Mic, there's a little thing called a knock sensor. Using decent fuel advances the ignition (and probably makes naff all difference).

The main reasons are because I like using Optimax for the 'cleaning' process... plus I've got a long drive on Saturday and have found that using Optimax gives me much better fuel economy.

I used to use Optimax in the 214, simply becayse of those reasons. :)

I'm yet to be convinced the effect of Optimax in regular engines is anything other than pscychological :)

It's for proper performance engines, imports, turbocharged cars, that sort of thing.

Whilst I'm sure you wish your car was one of those, it isnt, so dont waste your money. Don't think I'm picking on, I don't use Optimax in mine for the same reason. It's a standard engine, it's pointless.

I dont think you have to worry about knock.

Does your ECU advance ignition timing if you use > 95ron? I'm thinking not, and I know naff all about the engine and as you say - if if it could advance timing - the effect would not be felt. At all.

As for using Optimax for the cleaning properties - Shell's regular stuff has all the necessary detergents. :)

I've always kept a running record of my car's fuel consumption and it improved by about 2-3mpg when I started using Super Unleaded. The was also smoother than on standard unleaded.

When I was running on fumes I had to put in Tesco unleaded once - 30mpg (down from 38), running very rough, didn't always start first time and had no power at all (avoiding the jokes about it only being a 1.4 Astra). Yes this is probably the extreme but it was far happier on Super

I haven't yet tried it in my MG - it had a full tank when I picked it up and I haven't yet used it all up!

The manual for the Vauxhall said that using 93 Octane fuel will result in a reduction of power & torque and to only use it if absolutely neccessary. It said that it would run fine off 95-98 Octane fuel

The MG manual says do not, under any circumstances, use any fuel with an Octane rating of less than 95!

Thats because you havent been able to start it half the time :p

Well that's a stroke of luck - you can't actually buy < 95ron fuel.

Unless of course you urinate in your tank after filling up.

Super unleaded is - what, 7% more at the pump?

You're saying you've lost around the same in mpg.

So, you've not actually gained anything there at all from an economy point of view.

Fair enough

I still think it was smoother though :)

Don't bother. Unless you've thrown a whopping great turbo on the corsa and not told us.

Haha!! I wish!!:p Nope i havent, and i dont think i will try it tbh:) I would only use it if both unleaded and optimax get to the same price:)

Different fuels are built up differently.

Some are highly refined, and some, rather crudely have octane booster added.

The better refined fuel is obviously the better fuel. It also holds the octane for longer, doesn't go "stale" so quickly.

That's about as much as I know, but sure a 95 ron fuel from one place can be better than a 95 ron fuel from another.
