I think my clutch died

I think the clutch on my Hyundai Coupe disintegrated on the M25 last night...

I was attempting to go from 60 to 70 to overtake a lorry but when I put my foot down the rev counter shot up and the speed stayed the same. I could hold it at a constant speed but every time I gave it some throttle only the revs went up. I finally decided to whack my hazards on and pull up when I could smell burning clutch. I popped the bonet and sure enough smoke was billowing from my clutch. Called to RAC and had to wait 3 hours for a tow from London to Nottingham, now I'm waiting for them again to take me to a local garage to see if they can fix it.

I only got it last Saturday, so I'm quite annoyed for obvious reasons...

Isn't the clutch only used for changing gear and not accelerating? :p

Did you drop it down to 4th or something?

Isnt the clutch there to hold the gear in place to the engine.
And when you press the clutch pedal it disengages it?

Nope, I've got a feeling it got stuck half way open and it burnt out when I tried to put my foot down.

I was cruising in 5th, put my foot down and the revs shot up from 2.5k to 6k in a couple of seconds with no increase to speed.
