I think my iPhone might need to go back...

... unless I have a better experience with the battery life.

I love the phone, for all the reasons you're all probably familiar with, but the damn thing was on 20% battery by 2000 last night after a full charge at the wall (I unplugged it at 0730).

That was after a day of limited (20 mins or so) surfing, 90 mins iPod audio and 20 mins of calls. Not good at all.

What a shame. My old network has offered me a massive discount to stay with them and I'd rather have the iPhone, but what's the point in having such a lovely phone if it runs out of juice?

Anyone else having battery problems? Have I got a lemon?

It is 2.0 in general from my experience. I goto work with both my iphone and touch.

From what I can see, firmware 2.0 has hit battery life hard - disable push email and location services for a quick fix on the touch. I have had to now take a usb cable into work so I can charge both devices should they drop too low.

Yesterday morning was my iphones first full day at work. I got to the office at 07:45 and by lunchtime (13:00) it was at around 20%. I finished work at 16:00 with the device more or less fully charged and headed home on the bus. Trip duration was 1hr in which I took a 10min phone call, browsed these forums and mucked about with GPS/Googol maps.

At the end of the journey battery was at around 50%. Not impressed but I know Apple will issue out a new patch quick as 2.0 is generally a right **** up in terms of performance.

Sounds like it.

I can drain the battery in a day but that is with some pretty extensive internet browsing on wireless networks. I have noticed that if you dont use it to browse the web all the time then the battery lasts a lot longer (stating the obvious)!!

However, if you are not browsing the web then that sounds like a dodgy battery to me.

It's a shame you can't use something like bossprefs to turn off all those services you don't want.

Try things like turning down the backlight, turning off wifi & bluetooth etc.

edit: I wouldn't discount something like the home button getting pushed while it's in your pocket.

So it seems the best way to save batteries on the iPhone is to not use it at all:

I'm in a pretty bad reception area so today, I'm experimenting by turning off 3G.

Does anyone know if an update to 2.0 will come out soon and what difference this will make?

Also - if I return the iPhone and get an iPod Touch, will I be similarly frustrated by the battery life?

Ta

...

Been through all of that and it didn't make much difference to me.

On 1.1.4, I could leave my iPhone in my bag all weekend, and still have over 50% on a Monday morning.

Now I can't even leave it for a day without getting it down to 20% with no usage :(

The problem has to be 2.0, though whether some coding issue has crept in that leaves something switched on is yet to be seen. I'm sure (hope!) the next version will be an improvement

whatever is killing the battery is probably the same thing causing all the laggy problems people seem to be experiencing with V2. Think a program on the pc playing up and going full load and causing windows to grind to a halt - hopefully it wont take them long to sort it, but im glad i havent bothered with v2 on my original 8gb iphone.

Battery does seem to be poor on the iPhone v1 and v2 but I have mine in the dock whenever Im at home so I never really notice unless I go away for the weekend somewhere! Most likely drains it quicker because a normal phone sits in your pocket and you dont play with it, iPhones you have to play with :p

i honestly dont have a problem with the battery life on my iphone at all, but i dont do a lot of web surfing or use the wifi much. i only have to chage it every 2 days or so which is really no more or less than any other decent phone ive had, bar my n95 on the old firmware which far worse in the beginning.

I think it's the 3G.

I've had 3G switched off all day and listened to the iPod for 60 mins and I'm at about 80%:

So the iPhone 3G lasts well as a 2G phone.

Admittedly, 3G reception is poor where I live, so that's kinda fair enough. I know that the battery drains quickly when I'm working in London with 3G on though. I think going on the tube with the phone on doesn't help either.

It would be good to have an app that allows you to quickly manage your connections.

Its not all 3G though because ipod Touch users including myself have noticed a dramatic change too, and that thing hasn't got 3G.

As mentioned above - BossPrefs would be totally ideal. Shame Apple's daft app rules won't allow it onto the store.

Good point Kainz.

The other thing I did differently today was only use the Facebook app and I did a power off -then-on first thing in the morning.

Perhaps the OS isn't properly managing app closedown?

i really can't complain about the battery life on my iphone 3g. i use it quite a lot for texting, checking e-mails and web browsing mainly through wi fi but sometimes on 3g if i'm out of work/home and it lasts 3 or 4 days before it needs re-charging. :)

What are your settings?

My iPhone hit 20% at 2130 today - after being fully charged at 0730.

I have both a 3G and a normal iphone, I charged it for a 90 mins when i got it this morning while it was updating and syncing to itunes. Used it for music for at least 3hrs or so and probably about 30 mins of call time and a bit of web browsing playing games. The Batt level had only just moved to about 95%, on my old one it would have been down to about 80% normally, this is with 3G, location services and Wifi switched off though.

I've been looking at updating my touch to 2.0, but these battery issues are putting me off a bit, I've been reading other sites of people saying to turn of push messages and location based services and saves a lot of power, and also when you want to exit an application hold down the home button till the screen goes black then back to the front menu....
Might do the update tomorrow and see what the battery life is like, after playing on my mates 3g iPhone I really want the games! but also the battery life I got at the moment :(

It's gone back. I just need to be able to make and receive calls as a priority.

I'll see if there are promising updates over the next few months. Most impressed in all other ways by the phone and very impressed by the staff at the Apple store.
