I think you would certainly have to set yourself up as having some quite of quirk about you if you want to be on the show. Remember, they won't just take anyone who replies to the request, they will want to audition you first.

From what I remember, they get an allowance to spend (£80-£100 In think), but otherwise it is just a compo for them to win the £1000 prize.
