Still desperately trying to scratch the itch that is now about a year old.

What is a good, cheap, reliable Tele that would work well with pickup changes? Ideally under £150.

I dont really know what's out there to be honest, but Fender Squiers, are they any good? THe pups can be changed so it's really just a case of getting a good neck and body for a decent action.

Nothing wrong with some squiers.

But guitars you need to see them and try them before you get them i think. Some squiers can be just as good as the real thing, some will be horrible.

But overall they arent bad for the price.

OK, I've ordered, I presume it'll be the white one as displayed.

What pickups are good? I don't mind spending a bit of money, but the last time I looked for humbuckers for my Epi I was lookng at about £60 a pair.

I dunno really, something jangly sounding, but used for rock. Some of the sounds in the Kooks album would be nice to get, but I have a Laney LC30-II so I don't know how far I'd get with that.

Typical Telecaster sounds would be good, so an upgraded version of the real thing would be nice.

How would the Dimarzio's compare to a MIA Fender Telecaster?

i stuck some fender custom shop 69' single coils in my squier strat with no problem :) they have a lot more grrrr than the original jobbies

i got them off egay america for £70. at the time they were £112 on egay UK. took a bit longer to get here but was worth the saving i reckon

yeah, the dimarzio's will have a higher output than the ones you'll have in the guitar as standard.

How far removed are they from the original tone?

I've just thought, I suppose I don't really want a classic pickup, as the wood and overall quality of the instrument wouldn't be able to offer the tone just through the pickup. Just gotta decide what angle of attack to take on it.

Sorry to ramble but jangly I think is the way to go. What jangly pickups are available by DiMarzio?

gotta agree here, what ever you get, have a look on US auction. theres v.good chance you'll find them cheaper at current exchange prices :)

Ok, they do a pairing called the Twang Kings... 190-ish mv output, and 8/4/4 on their treble/mid/bass scale.

Sounds pretty much ideal for what I want, that ebay site has the Bridge pickup but doesn't look like it has the neck pickup.

Dimarzio do a pickup called the Tone Zone, with 5/8.5/8 on their tone scale, but offers the ability to split the coils... which interests me greatly.

1) Is wiring up a switch to a humbucker that can be split easy?
2) How do the tonal characteristics of a humbucker that has been split compare to a single coil?

Just an update in case people are interested, I got it yesterday (pretty rapid delivery, only ordered it Thursday). It was delivered via DHL and I didn't get charge any import tax or VAT on it so it really is a stonking bargain at £65.

First impressions - much better than expecting. The body is quite heavy, the finish is quite nice (looks thick so should take some abuse - good thing too as 5 minutes after getting it out the box my mate dropped it on his kitchen floor), the volume/tone pots are pretty solid and the pickup selector is much better than expected (though I was expecting the absolute worst). The scratchguard doesn't seem to fit properly, it seems to ride up and away from the body at the top which suggests whoever fitted it couldn't be bothered to do it properly! :p

The pickups aren't fantastic, but they're not toooo bad, I guess. Not massively bright, but they're fairly pokey and give off a reasonable sound. I'll be upgrading them anyway.

The neck is quite nice, but the frets are pretty rough and could do with smoothing out, or maybe just a frenetic bending session to smooth them out somewhat. I found that I was getting a lot of fine metal shavings coming it when I was playing last night, I'm guessing this was coming from the frets.

The bridge is a bit funny, it's easy to adjust the action, but maybe it's just a classic design I'm not familiar with but it just seems... rubbish. It does the job, but not very well. The strings each rest on their own saddle, which is basically just a cylindrical piece of metal with two screws that you adjust to raise the height. This is where the cheapness shows, but it's something that could always be changed.

All in all though for £65 it's definitely worth it, and with pickups, a new bridge and covering up off the god-awful logo on the headstock it will definitely be a keeper and a solid player.

Buy buy buy! ;)

i just bought a Dimarzio Telecaster pickup that i cant use, Email me if you're interested :p

and you might have been charged VAT/Duty, DHL pay it for you and then send you a letter asking you to pay it back to them :p

they did that to me last year, i didnt pay it and then moved out of that student house - they havent got my current address and hounded me for it, despite me using them for deliveries since ;)

Excellent stuff... in all honesty as long as the body and neck are fine, then you've got a good base to start on. I would go to over to http://www.axesrus.com/axecart.htm (look past the shoddy design :p) and get some parts, especially the tuners.... I got a set of klusons, new bridge and some circular string trees for £60... and if you're that bothered about the logo they do fender ones on the site
