Ive just finished my Business Management degree but had a bit of a turn around and want to get back into IT. Im always fiddling with computers.. hardware and software and could see myself doing it as a job and want to become a computer technician. My question really is how do i get into it....im 25 and havn't had a career yet and like i said ive just finished my business management degree. I've had a look about on the net and found a course called the comp TIA A+ which is reconised as the industry standard for being a computer technician. Is anyone here done the CompTIA A+? Was it a good investment? Are there any other paths i could look at getting into an ICT related job?

It would be great to hear from any techies at OC's also...what are your quals and how did you get there?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Andy

You got a degree and now want a near minimum wage job? I would aim to get into a blue chip company in a support role as they have some very good opportunities later down the line inc training.

The only way to make real money out of this is to be self employed and start your own business. Working for someone else is minimum wage.

Oh and you're confusing enjoying "fiddling" with commuters with doing that day in day out with people breathing down your throat to get it done.

Some people can turn hobbies into enjoyable work but most don't.

I would have thought somebody with a Business Management degree would be able to figure out how to start a PC Repair company.

If you are looking to do an A+ or N+ try and pass them before end of Dec as they are changing. At present you only have to pass it once to retain the cert. Passing after December 2010 will mean you will have to resit the exam every 3 years or something.

As you have a business management degree can you not look to do something in IT project management?

This is the best comment so far. How I laughed. Seriously, if you need to ask your qualification ment diddly squat.....

You did work for your qualification didn't you?

Just luck, knowing the right people. No qualifications needed for IT Technicians if you can do the job and have tiny bit experience your in. Ask the monkeys at OcUK. lol

Wow, don't bother, seriously. Even if you're starting your own company it's not easy and will be heaps of work to even get anywhere. I suggest keeping it as a hobby, especially if you have a degree already. You should aim higher.

there is money to be made at server level upwards but you would probably need to start at bottom, it's a job where experience is everything

What a way to waste 4 years getting a decent degree. Nothing wrong with being an IT Tech but you should have just gone and done it straight from school and you'd probably be near enough the 'top' of that particular tree now.

true, qualifications count for very little

It'll take a few years experience and some certs to start earning any real money. If you start first line you can expect salaries as low as £14k. I was lucky when I finished uni I got a job building custom computers and clusters for an ocuk competitor :D

The A+ course is a good place to start as it'll show you have knowledge of computer hardware and then N+ is networking. You then might want to look at Microsoft exams (MCPs).

Also bare in mind it's not all fun and games playing with computers, you're employed to keep computers running and staff/services working so they'll expect them fixed asap and expect people on your back constantly wanting things done.
