I want to block MSN - Solution must be aunt friendly!

Right, my cousin has her GCSEs. My Aunt asked if I could come round tomarrow to block MSN because she (my cousin) uses it too much.

I was thinking maybe blocking it via firewall but that'll be too complicated for my aunt. Is there a simple, straight out of the tin software that'll password protect MSN. Like, if my cousin wanted access to MSN she needed my Aunt's password typed in first?

Thanks for any help!

Even if you somehow manage to block msn (unlikely) she'll just use the web based msn's instead, like every kid does at school/college now! i.e. webmessenger/meebo/ebuddy/iloveim/etc/etc/etc.
Tell your aunt to get some parenting skills, imo.

Come on, give her a break. I know a lot of teenagers who used to sneak to MSN when they told their mums they were doing work on the computer. I don't think my cousin knows of the web based messanger. But still, as long as the MSN blockage is applied it should be sufficient.

her: "I can't get on msn at home"
mate: "oh use this website..... bla bla bla"

Not being funny, but surely now is the time when you don't want them to have stress and be annoyed. Surely this will just make it 10 times worse. Why not limit her time, with software, instead of taking it away completely, which seems like a lot better idea.

That's what my aunt is aiming for. "You can go on it x number of minutes but at half past y i'm putting the password on it"

MMMmmm, something so small is so complicated! :(

its not really

If she has a router use the web content manager if it has one; to block the web msn site and then block the pots msn uses on the firewall.

Cant see why its so hard

I suggest you download and install the K9 Webfilter software by BlueCoat - it has a simple GUI which does all your requirements..

It's free, you can block keywords on web urls and search engines (ie. block the word "msn messenger" and "msn" so she can't use the web-based java messengers. It also has an option to block MSN running on the local machine too.

Google for a download link.
