I want to learn guitar

Get a tutor and learn proper music theory.

I've been playing guitar 14 years. I'm completely self taught. I am mediocre at best. I can play along to CDs and the like, play punk rock like a mother****er. But my technical knowledge is non-existent. I wish I'd had a tutor to teach me scales and other stuff and how to read proper music instead of just being able to read tabs.

What I don't understand is the difference between the guitars, what makes one model £125 and the other worth £257 ?

Yamaha Pacific 012 £125
Yamaha Pacific 112V £196
Yamaha Pacific 112VCX £219
Yamaha Pacific 212VFM £257

Skeeter, if you want I've got an electric guitar you can have. Might need the strings replacing, but it comes with an amp, soft case, lead & a book or two, and I think I've got a pack of strings lying about somewhere too. All you've got to do is figure out a way to get it to you from Est Kent and pay for the delivery, and the lot's yours. Trust me if you're interested. No strings attached.*

*Well, strings attached, but like I said, they might need replacing. Hasn't been tuned in 2 years or so.

This is good advice, but even 6 months of an hour or so a week wasn't enough for me to learn a lot of the theory, scales and the like but I did learn good technique which will help me learn songs on my own. I'm still not very competent, in fact I struggle and I left it for a while.

You really have to have a good hour per day with the guitar which is great if you really wanna do it. That said months later of not touching it, I remember a lot of the technique so I can pick up more or less where I left off :)

Don't be put off though, it is rewarding once you put something together and its difficult to forget once you've picked something up if you do it right. Plus we have youtube and lots of sites at our fingertips.

Is there any cheaper guitars that i could get that are good for learners? The pacifica is nice well from what is said about them but isnt their cheaper ones that ok might not be as good but still would be good to learn on.

Edit sry i missed ur post their deadbeat, thats a very kind offer thanks, added u to msn to discuss it, btw which guitar is it?

Nabbed from another site:-

The 012 is the "economy" model with standard grade hardware and pickups -- and different wood for the body (Agathis) -- The 112j is the next step up with an Alder body and slightly better hardware - and the 112v has the alder body plus better whammy system and Seymour Duncan (alnico) pickups with a coil tap switch for the bridge humbucker.

I had a 112v and think it is well worth the money.

Offered 45 for it and he accepted, kinda wish he didnt lol as was hoping to get a package setup with amp and case and stuff from some other auctions.

Ah well.

£55 delivered for a pacifica 012 with recent restrung strings isnt bad i guess.

Ok now, which amp and electronic tuner to get. Somit like £20 delivered for amp.

Anything else i need?

Oh and strap i guess id need too. Any specific types?

You don't need an amp right away, if you're a complete beginner there's loads to learn before you even get that far

you'll need a pick too

I want to learn with a amp to get that "sound" of an elect guitar. Be boring if i played without one i think.

Yeah complete beginner, dont know anything musical tho learn a few things off utube but ask me them and ill say i forgot by now :p

Any type of pick will do? Or look for tenacious D pick of destiny :p

I taught my self guitar when I was 16-18 years old, got relatively good (I just used tabs from the internet) but then I stopped playing, I am not 22 and regret not carrying on so much, I still have my guitar :(

of course it sounds better with an amp but if you're a beginner you probably wont need one for a while and will give you time to save some money :)

Watch Justin Guitars lessons for beginners, he'll tell you everything you need to know as a beginner :)

I'd definitely recommend getting lessons when you start out. When I started I was teaching myself as I went along, playing along to songs I liked and generally having some fun doing it. Eventually I reached a plateau where no matter what I tried, I could never get any better.

Went with my tail between my legs to a guy I know who does tuition and after a few lessons I was really starting to notice the difference. Mainly I found that my the position I was keeping my fretting hand in was limiting me, which after a few lessons and a lot of conscious effort on my behalf has now been resolved. It's a lot more difficult to unlearn and replace with something new than it is to learn it properly from the start. It really helped to kick me from playing songs on the guitar, to actually playing it and knowing theory and different styles.

While everyone wants to get an amp and start bashing out some distorted rock chords, it's vital that you get to know what the notes naturally sound like otherwise you'll be gimping yourself right at the start. My routine now is at least 30 minutes of exercises before going on to learning songs. Ideally an hour, but I make the most out of what time I have.

Obviously, find someone who you feel comfortable with playing the sort of music you want or you'll lose interest pretty quickly.

Well lessons are expensive almost as expensive if not more than driving lessons lol.

I mean sure id like some, but i doubt i can afford many maybe 2 lessons which at tenner each would be 20 quid which is a lot to spend on 2 hours which knowing me i bet i barely learn anything and bash me head in saying wtf is all that and damn 2 mins after he leaves ill be going hmm i cant recall anything that guy just said.

So expense of lessons and probably going to lessons is a bit of a hastle.

It would be great to be taught but meh it costs a lot for so little time and probs forget the stuff u been taught.
