Howzit guys,

I've got a dual boot running with, Linux and Windows 7 beta. Working fine.

Now, I really want to use the Linux more however a few ( what seems like simple things ) that I cannot do in Linux are stopping me from machine the switch over. And there they are;

1. I need to have access to the works server. In windows, all I do is open the run command and type in. '\\server1'. This works perfectly. How do I do the same in linux?

2: I need to open remote desktop connections over VPN, is this possible in Linux?

3. I tried setting up my emails with evolution mail, which needs to connect to the Microsoft Exchange server we have. I did have this working a while ago, using the IMPA settings, rather then just Microsoft Exchange...

I'm running, Ubuntu 8.10.

I'm also trying to install new themes, that have like a transparancy effect...cannot come right with that but the above is more important.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

If you're using gnome, Places > Connect to server does what you want.
Once connected select Bookmark, Add Bookmark. Job done.
Or type smb://server1.

Applications > Internet > Remote Desktop Viewer. Or do some research and install another RDP program.

If you use the very latest Evolution (so you will need Ubuntu 9/Fedora 11) Exchange should work well now.

You can only get real transparency if you're running a composting desktop manager.

You haven't really put a lot of effort into this have you? :P

Yus, and a vegetable filesystem ;) :p

If you're running 8.10, then you'll no doubt already be using Beryl or Compiz - have you enabled advanced desktop effects, and/or installed compiz-effects-manager (I think that's right anyway :))

Why would there be no need to update Linux? ( I'm almost done anyway, lol might as well let it finish )

Well, I see Ubuntu 9 is in beta, worth downloading it?

Secondly, I remember seeing a list of Useful Applications for Linux....where is it now? :(

When I say there's no need, I only meant to accomplish what you require - that is, Compiz or Beryl will already be installed.

As for Ubuntu 9 - it's entirely up to you, but it's in first or second alpha release, so it may be worth holding off :)

Well, it's already stable from what I've seen - you could download it now and then upgrade it on the 24th... you won't need to re-install or even use a CD as soon as it's officially released, you can just update your sources to use the official release instead of the beta.
