I was deaf in 1 ear for 24hours

My mates little brother was very hard of hearing for about 3 years when he was small

Upon investigation, the doctor found about 4 of those plastic gun caps in his year, he'd rammed them in when he was small ! :eek:
 
I'm profoundly deaf, with practically no hearing in my left ear and quite a big loss in my right. It's just one of those things you accept in life and deal with. I wasn't born deaf, but I lost my hearing at such a young age that I have no memory of what it was like beforehand. In fact, I even consider my hearing to be quite good now :o but I have no idea what I'm missing out on.

I lipread too, so can cope with most everyday conversations but phone is a no-no and tv I need subtitles. Group conversations are also a bitch, I get lost somewhere in the middle...

A similar thread popped up a few months back, and I answered a feel questions there, but feel free to ask anything if you are curious :)
 
I need to syringe my left ear as it sometimes gets blocked and I cant hear out of it.

Where can I get it done? Can I get it done at my GP? Or do I need to go to a hospital?

i think you make an appointment at your GP.
but if your like me and work in the week its a bit inconvenient.
it would be much easier if one could walk into their local hospital and ask to have them done there and then. even if it ment waiting a couple of hours.

anyone ever done this ?
 
If it's a regular problem, isn't it possible to set up an appointment every 6 or so months (whatever is needed) with the ENT department at the hospital?

Yep, I've got small ear canals so mine block up all the time. I hate it. Just have to be careful never to get any water in my ears because it gets stuck and my ear blocks.

I don't like it these days when they use the machine, but when they use a syringe I quite like the feeling :D

Well I've been deaf in both ears since I was about 2 and a half years old so I don't really remember life before being deaf.

I've also got the double curse of having quite twisty ear canals. :p Whenever I used to go to the RNTNE (Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear) Hospital on Grays Inn Road in London one of the audiological staff would stick some kind of auditory probe into my ear to see how my ears responded to certain frequencies. They often found it difficult to get the machine to work because they had to fiddle around with the angle to aim the probe into my ear canal with. :D

So when I get ear wax, quite literally compounded, by my hearing aids its quite a long way in which means syringing. Syringing itself is something I don't mind. It was when a prat of a nurse tried to wash my ears out with very cold water I wasn't very happy. I had to hold a cold metal container to my ear to catch the water. The container was so cold that pressed up against my head I felt quick sick. It didn't help matters much that my right ear hurt instantly. Turned out my just healed ear drum had been perforated again so the nurse tried the other ear. Same pain so she left it.

Went home and later that day, or the next day, I had lovely green gunk flowing quite quickly out of my right ear. And if that wasn't bad enough I had blank gunk doing the same with my left ear. As someone who wears hearing aids an ear ache is very painful, can't wear hearing aids. So when there's gunk flowing in both ears I can't wear hearing aids. I think I was about 14/15 years old when that happened and that was the last time I missed days off school for any problems with my ears.

I've never found it too bad, but as Jonny69 mentions below the machines aren't as 'nice'. I don't think they have enough power really and you end up there for ages if the wax isn't very soft. The pulsating feel isn't as nice as the rush from a proper syringe. ;)

Do you find working underneath old cars affects you more? I originally started having to have my ears syringed a short while after being under my old mk1 Escort all day with a wire brush scraping the rust off ready for some underseal. I thought maybe it was a fluke but had similar experiences whenever doing that kind of work and recently when cutting loads of wood on the tablsaw for my kitchen I had the same.

Can't say I've noticed Wicksta. It's usually swimming or if I get water in my ear in the bath that does me in :D

Otex now do a home syringing kit with a rubber bulb and a bottle of drops. I did my own last time over the basin and it was soooooo satisfying :D

Where did you get the Otex bulb from? I had one (not Otex) when I lived in Germany but when I moved back in 2004 I couldn't seem to find a similar home flush kit here. The doctor here gave me a funny "you what!" look when I asked him if I could get one. :D

I'll have to check my local chemist.

Just book yourself in with your nurse, prepare your blocked ear about a week in advance though with oil to soften the wax so to allow the blockage to be cleared with reduced risk of damage.
