You should have a science degree, working in the industry as a researcher/analyst of some variety.

This would be the minimum requirements from an industry perspective.

Academics would state, you are not a scientist until you have completed a PhD.
Well I have a science degree and I work as a researcher at a science institution. The second bit, I'm partway through that :p

I don't think the PhD is essential to be honest. Most at work have them, but not everybody. For me it's more career progression in a field where UK industry is heading in the next few years: sustainability in engineering.
