Anyway, scientists in my book are scientists if they're dedicated to their work and know their stuff regardless of what their qualifications are. Some of the best stuff has been discoverd in sheds!

I'm not sure what I meant now.

People who has telescopes and looks at stars n stuff.

You should have a science degree, working in the industry as a researcher/analyst of some variety.

This would be the minimum requirements from an industry perspective.

Academics would state, you are not a scientist until you have completed a PhD.

Well I have a science degree and I work as a researcher at a science institution. The second bit, I'm partway through that

I don't think the PhD is essential to be honest. Most at work have them, but not everybody. For me it's more career progression in a field where UK industry is heading in the next few years: sustainability in engineering.
