I Went Wireless !!!

Hey All

I am moving into the loft soon so I needed to get a wireless router as currently I have wires running under the carpet to my downloading rig in the spare room.
Obviously not that I will be going in the loft wires were just not an option so I got hold of a Netgear DG834G real cheap and its working flawlessly wired into my PC but I have bought a Netgear WG111 wireless usb adaptor for my downloading rig. Not to bothered about pings but I just wondered how reliable I should expect the connection from my wireless router in the loft down to a spare bedroom would be. I chose a Netgear one as I have been warned to stay clear of no name dongles so I am hoping it will be ok.

Any thoughts ?

Your wireless should be fine. I am typing this from my laptop in the front room, and my Speedtouch wireless router is upstairs in my bedroom. Signal strength is Excellent and I have never had any drop outs.

How have you managed that?
I always get drop outs on our Laptop.

Do you use the integrated WIFI or a USB adaptor or something?
 
I use the same router (as op (netgear)) in my flat with 4 other flat mates who use wireless to access the internet and we never have any dropouts, i have to say this router with V3.01.25 firmware is totally solid for me, never had to reset the router, hope this helps.

Well our Router has never been firmware updated since we bought it.

In its settings, it says firmware version date "October 2004"

But when you go to update the router, you need to download the update then direct the Routers updater to the file on your PC.

There are no firmware downloads for my Router on the Belkin website...

Anyone else have a Belkin Router, and have firmware updated it?

I am getting the Netgear WG111 dongle tomorrow so will let you know how it goes.
 
Well i got my usb dongle today and everything is setup and running at 54mbps.
My problem is I only get 630kb/s maximum when transferring a file from the wireless pc to my pc via ftp.

Any ideas why ?

The speed you are getting seems about correct. My network is all connected via Cable at 100MBPS and the download rate for files on other PC's seems to be around the 1-2MB/s mark.
 
Ahh well seems my speeds are ok then.

What speeds do other people get on the same router as its rather popular.
