i5 7500 or Ryzen 5 1400 for SFF?

Hi,

So I'm thinking of building a SFF PC (probably in the Silverstone Milo ML08-H).
It'll hopefully be used for gaming.

Am I better off going for a H270 Mobo + i5 7500 or a B350 Mobo + Ryzen 5 1400?
Which one performs best in games?
Which one runs coolest (as CPU cooling will be limited (probably look to use stock cooler with either one)?

Also (and I realise this is the wrong section, but I didn't want to make 2 threads), what's the difference in the Intel B250 and H270 chipsets/motherboards? Also, what's the difference in the AMD B350 and X370 chipsets/motherboards? (Can you overclock on the B350?)

Thanks.

Will the 7500 and 8400 use the same socket? i.e. will I be able to drop the 8400 in the same motherboard?

1400 gives me 8 threads and comes with Quake Champions too.
Or the 1600, 65W and 6c/12t. But it is a bit more expensive. Do I really need hex core? Do I even need 8 threads?

What is your price point for cpu, mb and ram together?

Is this system for carting back and forth to the work lan parties?
It is.
Currently the stuff I've been looking at is in the £400 region for CPU, mobo and RAM. But it depends what I can find really.

My next issue is that the case only has 58mm clearance for the CPU cooler, which is too big for the default cooler that comes with the 1500X and 1600. Also struggling to find an AM4 low profile cooler (under 58mm) that should be able to do the job.

I'm still unsure on this. Ryzen seems like it might be be the better option if I plan to upgrade the chip, but I'm not sure if I will be.
With the exception of a few games I'm not sure many benefit from the 8 threads over the 4 the 7500 would offer though. But the 7500 isn't really any cheaper...

The 1600 Ryzen seems overkill, so I'd probably stick to the 1400 or 1500X. For the price difference the 1500X seems better due to the higher cache and base clocks?
That said I think the stock 1400 cooler would fit in the case, but the stock 1500X wouldn't, so I'd need the Noctua NH-L9a and AM4 mount, which is an extra £40 or so. Maybe the 1500X isn't worth it?
Maybe the Noctua NH-L9a would allow me to overclock a bit though? Not sure it's needed (or a good idea) but it's always fun to tinker right?

Get the one of the Ryzen 5 or 7 CPUs that come with the wraith cooler and the Biostar X370 mITX,
Also get compatible ram at the highest speed possible. eg G.SKILL F4-3200C14D-16GTZR or APACER EK.16GA6.GFBK2/EK.16GA4.GGBK2/78.CAGN4.4090B to run it at 3200mhz, if you don't have some high speed ram. (as per biostar website)

You can overclock the CPU specially the 6 core Ryzen 5s will do it nicely. Go easy on the voltage to keep temps low, and you will be set.
They consume less power than the intel parts, even when overclocked, so nothing to worry about.
Overclock a Ryzen 7 in a ITX case that only supports 58mm coolers? Even the cooler that comes with the 1500X is bigger than that.
What's the benefit of a X370 motherboard over a B350?
Struggling to find games that use 8 threads in reviews. Which ones benefit from 12?

I was considering the 1400 because I can probably get away with the stock cooler, but I'm still thinking about the 7500 as it seems when a game isn't maxing out 4 threads the 7500 gets better FPS if you're not GPU limited. Can't seem to find measurements on the stock Intel cooler though, anyone know how tall it is?

To be honest I'm quite impressed that there's an argument in the CPU section but it's not AMD vs Intel!

I'd like to wait for the Intel, but I'm not good at waiting...
I'd also need to wait for a mITX motherboard, no point in getting a Z board, so would want to wait for a cheap H series. How long is that gonna take?
And then I worry that there would be "launch" prices I'd need to wait to end.

I'm thinking I might go with the B350 and 1400. It's cheaper, I know the cooler fits, there's the possibility of overclocking (although I think that's unrealistic given the cooling), it comes with a free game and it might last longer (with it having 8 threads).
Will the B350 support the next gen of Ryzen chips? If not there's the chance of slotting a better Ryzen chip in there, especially if I pay for a better cooler. (I guess this is also true of the H270, could put any of the Kaby Lake chips in there I guess).

i5 7500 seems better in games if not maxed out, if there's no GPU bottleneck. Not sure if the 980 will bottleneck?
Based on these reviews:

I don't think anybody is going to be able to help on the price or other bits on the Intel platform just yet but we do know that AMD claim you will be able to use the am4 socket for the next 2 or more generations of Zen. You also have quite a lot of space to move up from the 1400 in the current gen so that's not bad going either. I'm also led to believe that even on the wraith cooler you can expect some fairly decent overclocks which also doesnt sound bad.

I think given that there isn't a massive gulf In performance, picking up whatever is cheap and available is not at all a bad strategy. I imagine you will have some space for upgrades on both platforms so you won't have any issues there.
No, they were largely rhetorical questions, it's just what goes through my head when I think about waiting for the new Intel stuff.

I was hoping there'd be some OC headroom, but I believe the 1400 is the Wraith Stealth cooler which is smaller than the spire you get with the 1500X and 1600. But it's the only one that will fit in the case. Shame as I'd really have preferred the 1500X or 1600, although the 1600 is probably overkill for gaming PC at this point.

Darn that thing is narrow. Does it include risers/cables for pci-e cards to fit sideways? (Or am I just looking at those images wrong?)
It does, I think you can see it more clearly in images on the Silverstone website. I think it's like a PCB riser sort of built into the case.
Now wondering if there's anything sorta similar in size that's a bit wider so has greater cooler clearance.

But I do like that case...

EDIT: Fixed late night typos
