Basically i am creating a new rig. Will be running 1080ti then eventually in SLI when I can afford.

Been doing a lot of reading around and currently value for money the 7700k gives the best frame rate pretty much I can see even though it being an older chip. Unless you want to spend silly money on the i9 series. Thing is I dont want to be shooting myself in the foot yes it gives good FPS now but lets say in 2 years time when newer games come out should I have gone for something with more cores and have waited and saved myself a couple more years before having to upgrade?

All help thanks in advance!

8700K is the king of gaming right now... end of discussion... it has 6c / 12t so gives you a bit of future wiggle room. 7700k is garbage now, i know this is true because the internet told me so! but yeah wait for the 8700K, or better still wait til the z390 platform next year!

In all seriousness though, id not even consider a 7700K now and im a very impatient person, just hold out for the 8700K. And dont mistake price with better gaming performance, im fairly certain no i9 will beat the 8700k in gaming right now.

Also why bother with dual 1080ti? by the time you get your 8700K the Nvidia 11XX cards will probably be close to release, flog off the 1080ti and buy the new 1180ti! ;)

Really, why does it have such good benchmarks in most of the games?

Probably because until recently it was the best CPU for gaming, then the 8700K came along and beat it, however 8700k is a rare commodity at the moment, have a google around and check youtube, you will see the 8700k handily beats the 7700k, and besides who wants last gen junk when you can get more for your money with the newer gen stuff.

Mobster: Thanks for the info, I forgot to mention the last pc i built was around 6 years ago with the quad core q6600 chip. So I am quite out of date with ongoings in the latest cpu and gpu technology. From what I can see there isnt much difference between the two from the this video.

Mobster You say its a rare commodity at the moment. It's not even released for sale.

Do you have a gaming rig now,OP and if so what CPU does it have??

CAT-THE-FIFTH: No not yet I just have the case the Silent Base Pro 900 and just about to buy the PSU. Next up is the CPU which is why im enquiring on these forums

What GPU do you intend to pair it with and what resolution do you play at?? Something like an Core i5 8400 or Core i5 8600K is also worth considering too.

I'd wait for stock of the 8700k personally. The 7700K ad 6700K IMO are fine for those who already have a motherboard that supports those CPU's and want an upgrade without paying more for a motherboard..
Gaming aside the 8700K will be near 50% faster in some applications and that's worth having, even if only for a little more future proofing.

If you can afford the 8700k buy it when it's back in stock.

Buying a pre binned one will simply line the pockets of retailers although it'll be delidded for lower temps. I think the delidding tool is £30 + £10 for paste. That's a £60 deficit.

1. + 2 physical cores over the 7700k
2. Latest platform

If you really can't wait the 7700k is the next best choice but you'll sacrifice the above.

The 8400 or the 8600k if you want overclocking are options. What monitor do you have ? If it's 60hz then anything will do from the coffee lake i5/7 range due to the additional cores.

If you have a 144 - 240hz @ 1080p monitor the 8700k makes sense as it can feed the GPU quicker.

+1 to waiting for the 8700K
Stocks & pricing should improve in time.
Get the DDR4 right now if you haven't already since DRAM prices are only going to increase.

No brainer. 8700k on average clock higher than 7700k plus an extra 2 cores. Unless you're looking to save a couple of quid (which I doubt if on 1080ti and looking to sli) them 8700k all the way.

Z270 does have a plx board in the line-up though but whether there's any benefit for it on sli is debatable.
