i7 920 Temperatures getting VERY high!

Hi

I am experiencing some slight issues with my temperatures when playing BF3 on my i7 920.

My PC specs are:

i7 920 (2.66 - Not overclocked)

NVidia GTS 450

8GB of Corsair XMS3 Ram at 2000Mhz

X58-UD3R Motherboard

Akasa Venom Nano CPU Fan (My most recent purchase from Overclockers)

------------------------------------------------------------------

The when playing Battlefield 3, my temperatures on my CPU are getting into the high 90's and even to 100 degrees C.... Which is very high and that's not even overclocked!

I have made sure that there is enough thermal paste on the processor but not too much and have made sure that it's sitting on the processor correctly.

Anyone have an idea as to what it could be that's giving me the high temperatures?

Idle Temps are: Highest - 40 ---- Lowest - 37

Please do ask me questions and I am great-full for all advise given :)

Many thanks :D

Is the cooler fitted properly?

What programs do you use to measure the core temp ?

Is tha case well ventilated ?

Is the cooler clean? I mean is there no dust between the fins?

If you're recently fitted a new heat sink and fan I suspect it has been fitted properly. An i7 will shut itself down around 100.

Andi.

The cooler is fitted properly. I made sure of this and made sure that it was before booting.

I use Core-Temp to measure the temperatures.

The case is mega ventalated. I just bought a Cooler Master 690 from Overclockers in their sale. I've got 1 front fan, 1 left side fan, 1 top fan, 1 rear fan and a direct CPU backplate fan on the case. When idling (running a few things here and there) the CPU is at pretty low temps, but on BF3 and other games it gets really high :S

The cooler is clean too. It's fairly new and I've just taken a look at it and there's no dust at all.

Have you applied thermal paste? :D If so what amount?

have you got your case fans the right way round top one blowing out try reseating cooler with a pea size like you did but let the cooler spread it out

is the fan working on the cooler and is that the right way round i had an i7 930 and temps never got near that and it was running at 4 gig

defo something wrong, id highly recommend re-seating the cpu cooler...

and to measure temps correctly, use Core temp, despite other peoples reviews about it, it works very well with the Intel i' series cpu's, i3, i5 and i7.. very accurate indeeed. and tells you the temp of each individual core....

The Akasa Venom fan is working perfectly. Although it does sound very loud it is working fine. I have re sat the cooler and It is still reading high on high loads.

You say the Venom is new. I would suggest putting the original cooler back on and see what the temps are like then.

My i7 920 when @ stock with a noctua DH-12 only hits about 60`c after 5 runs of intel burn test. Definitely looking like a cooler issue.

I will try this when I get home later on, but I am pretty sure that it was the temps with the old (stock) cooler that made me buy another one....

I'll try it none the less. And also, what is Intel Burn? :o

whoa, if its hitting 100c just while gaming then you definitely have a cooler problem.

Do not run intel burn test lol

Too much (or none) paste would be my guess

If you reseat the cooler, you could inspect it to make sure the heatpipes haven't been damaged or pierced somehow.

I'll re-seat it, doing a thorough check tonight.

I will even put the stock i7 cooler in to check that again.

When puttin the paste on, I use a little amount and spread it with a credit card to make sure it covers the whole of the processor.

is there anything else I should do? :S
