i7 930 vs 1090T Black Edition

Hey Madals,

Fascinating reply! :)

Upgrading every 5 years or so is because I am not comfortable building my own computer.
Interesting . . . I had "assumed" you were building the PC yourself! . . . . I mean everybody builds there own PC right! :o . . . . Having read the thread back again it seems you were always intending to buy a pre-build but were just not sure what processor to use!

Interestingly, I notice that you are "not comfortable" at all with the prospect of getting up close and personal with computer hardware! :p . . . It's a pity but I guess it's just not for some people . . .

I would happily swap parts (GPU, HDD etc) but things like processors and motherboards are out of my comfort zone
It's interesting to hear that . . . all I see is several screws that need undoing, a processor socket with a lever . . . it may be complicated in your mind but it's not exactly rocket science . . . I sense a strong apprehension from you in trying new things . . . pushing out of the "comfort zone" is how one grows and improves . . . if we spend our life stuck in our "comfort zone" we will never achieve anything really beautiful! ;)

overclocking, I get the principle behind it and how it works - I just don't feel comfortable messing around with it!
Yeah you wouldn't be the first person I heard say that . . . the truth is I could teach you the overclocking basics in about two hours, it's pretty simple and I've never damaged a processor or motherboard from overclocking . . . I guess you must have read some horror stories and got it in your mind that something bad could happen . . . I think if you can figure out how to use a microwave oven or washing machine then you could learn how to overclock your PC to tap that little extra performance . . . it really isn't rocket science!

Current PC is a [£2000] dell XPS M1710 laptop.
Ok . . . I'm starting to build up a better picture of you now! :D

By the spare cash around, I mean I need to get a computer and have that much to spend on it
Are you trying to find a way to tell me your Dad said you can have the money! ;)

after this point though I wont have money for a new computer for several years and as I am not comfortable in swapping parts much I wouldn't want to keep replacing.
So your Dad said he will buy you a new PC and you wouldn't want to buy a £800 PreBuilt now and ask him again in a few years for another £800 so you figure just buy a £1500 PreBuilt . . . . makes sense I guess!

By strapped for cash, I mean I wont have the spare money to justify spending 800 on a gaming computer but I wont be counting pennies either (I am in a very fortunate position in that respect).
I'm fairly certain that an £800 pound system in two years will make a £1500 pound system bought today look quite dated . . . I do think you are in a very "fortunate" position though and my wise-spending advice is probably wasted here as it would seem you are not spending your own money ££

I just don't want the hassle of having to set up computers every few years
Fair enough . . . I guess the word "hassle" is a very subjective thing . . . I would consider gaming on an outmoded 2K laptop with graphic details on low to be a hassle . . . lets hope your new £1500 system lasts a bit longer!

My dad just splashed out on a £3500 system (i7 6 core OCed to 4.5Ghz + 12GB RAM etc etc)
Your dad must be a fairly wealthy guy! . . . what does he do with his PC then?

his last computer was still a pentium 4!). I get that mentality of "buy the best you can afford" from him.
How did he cope using a Pentium 4? . . that must have been a real drag using that for anything serious? . . . . interesting comment about "buy the best you can afford" . . . I don't think that works for me as I tend to buy what I need, I eat a sandwich for lunch instead of a silver service dinner, I use public transport instead of a private chauffeur . . . and I fly economy class instead of first class . . . I could afford all these things but personally I just don't like to waste money . . . heh I guess I get that "mentality" from my parents! ;)

I do understand that the "best you can afford" approach to avoid upgrading along the way isn't the "best" approach but it is the one I feel most comfortable with.
Well I guess you gotta do what you gotta do . . . I wouldn't want you to do anything you wasn't comfortable with . . . there is no "Best" way to do anything but only what works best for you! ;) . . . I was posting in this thread to try and let you know an angle to save some money but from what you have told me I would only be saving your Dad's money and by the sounds of it he’s "minted" :p . . . Tell him he's a cheapskate and that you want a PC just like his! :D

It's been a pleasure talking with you Madals and good luck!

with the standard of pc games today like a lot of them being a console port.

you never know it can may be last 5 years

i'll give you an example of the amount i spent on my computer 3 years ago and what it is today, so you have an idea what your future may hold

well i spent £1000 3years ago to build a
C2D 2.66ghz e6750
2x1gb ddr3 1333mhz (the latest ram just released at a staggering £300)
asus p5k3 deluxe
sapphire radeon 3870
enermax 620w psu
2x raptor 150GB

3 years old and i can still play starcraft 2 at max setting 1920x1200 smooth
Left 4 dead 2 at max setting 1920x1200, not super smooth but playable

although it was still doing everything i needed i have now upgraded the ram to 4gb and from vista 32 to windows 7 64bit just so it doesnt load as much in normal operation

even tho is 3 years old i'm still quite happy with it.

yea i i spent about 1000 6 years ago and it got me

amd64 3200 , 2gb or memory , a sb live sound card , cheiftec case , x800 a 120gb hardrive and a 17inch crt monitor :D

guess how many years before it was obsolete :p not many because along came pixel shader 3.0.

buying the most expensive stuff is never going to last much longer than buying the medium end gear because computers move forwards way to fast in 5 years we will probably have dx13 and anyway current gfx card will be in the fetal position having nightmares about xbox 720 ports and crysis 3

surely the op can find someone who lives near him that would build his computer for a few beers or something its not like its hard anyway ive only ever built 3 full pc's and ive never encountred any problems

Buying a top-spec pc and hoping that it will still be up for the job in 5 or 6 years time is asking a bit much. As mentioned I think your best bet is to purchase a £800-900 pc that will last say 3 years and at that point sell it on and buy another £800 or £900 pc that will last you another 3 years ... rinse and repeat.:D

Well after looking at the systems and all the comments I think I am going to go with the Ultima dreadnought with a 60 GB ssd and a h7o water cooler and plan to upgrade the ram (6 more GB) and add a second gpu in about a year.
Do you guys think that is a wise move?
