Icelandic volcano 'set to erupt

So does this mean we'll have massive ash clouds like last time and there'll be no flights etc.

Magic 8 ball says "unlikely"...;)

Size isn't everything. The reason Eyjafjallajokull caused the problems it did is due to the reaction of water with the eruption. More steam/water gives more "ash" (read: Higher explosivity due to mixing) and as such a greater risk to planes. It all depends on the reaction of the water from the glacier.

Well it's sounds like it'll be worse than last time. If a super volcano erupted like Yellowstone we'd all die, it'd almost cause the extinction of the humans race.

Depends if it blows fully or just lets of a small effusive eruption. The latter is probably more likely.

As for Yellowstone, even with an eruption rivalling its biggest it wouldn't wipe out mankind. We'd have a lot of rubbish years but we as a species wouldn't become extinct (human ancestors have already lived through multiple eruptions of this size and they are normally not causes of large extinction events.

Last I heard it was 65,000 years overdue!!

That's because someone on Horizon couldn't count... :p

Well probably more to do with trying the scare tactics.

I really hope it doesnt happen I have a holiday of a lifetime booked with my family. We are flying on the 22nd to orlando to stay in our holiday house and there for a couple of weeks and then we are going to the british virgin islands and are renting a 49ft yacht for a week with our close family friends it cost over $10,000 just to rent it! Hopefully everything will be ok!

But we'd all die in this country would we not?

We don't know.

That is the best and only honest answer anyone can give, nobody knows for sure what would happen because no one can be sure what kind of eruption Yellowstone would throw at us if it did decide it wants to erupt.

To be honest what's more important is time, we likely have tens of thousands of years before any form of event takes place so if an eruption happens that would wipe out life on earth NOW happens in 50,000 years, we may have technology capable of preventing it or dealing with it in some way.

We don't know, but can take an educated guess on the matter. The erupton would probably cause global (or at least northern hemisphere) cooling of a few degrees which would cause a very cold period, potentially a mini ice age (or starting a full one). It would take years for ice to build up porperly over most of the UK so IMO I can't see it affecting the UK that much.

We would probably get thin (mm) ash deposits a few days/weeks after the eruption but the major issue would be the temperature drop caused by the gases released (sulphur rich ones in particular), this could cause food supply issues.

As for the US... Well most of the west (except the coastal regions) would probably be covered by inches-tens of metres of ash depending on how close they are (ash will likely fall only a little distance west of Yellowstone so those in Ca will be mostly fine). The east coast would probably have a similar issue to us, mainly a little ash and a lot of cold.

That is ONLY in the case of a caldera eruption which I would like to stress again is the LEAST likely.

Also I would like to note that in terms of when it might happen, most scientists seem to agree that "Recurrence intervals of these events are neither regular nor predictable", meaning this "overdue for an eruption" stuff is nonsense and scare mongering.
