I buy presents for my niece and nephew based on how annoying for their parents they would be. For instance, my nephew's 7 next month, so he's getting an electrically operated, belt fed, fully automatic Nerf machine gun.

Don't go the video game route. Getting kids into video games is probably the worst thing you can do in all honesty.
Something outgoing like a scooter is a nice idea, a few posts above.
