Was thinking about getting win 7 while i still have some crimbo money left lol
my rig is in sig and currently on XP pro service pack 3 Now to me what i'm on flies boots in less than 30 seconds and ready to browse.

if i did get Windows 7 do u think i would take a massive performance hit?
is win 7 more hungry for ram and proccy power than xp pro SP3

Some advice would be much appreciated

Id go for it, installed Windows 7 on all my machines and im well impressed with boot times, as for been RAM hungry im running it on my Toshiba NB200 netbook with 1GB and it flies..

I would go for Windows 7, also go for another 2 Gb RAM and run the 64 bit version. As more RAM will speed things up in general as it will reduce the use of the pagefile.

another 2gb of pc 3200 ram is almost as expensive as modern ddr3
looked on various sites and ebay and it's about £50 for a matching 2GB pair
that's kinda ridiculous IMO

RAM in general has shot up in price over the last year. With PC-3200 ram being quite old not so much is getting used so up shoots the price the older the ram gets.

My friend had RAMBUS RAM in his pc and the manufacturer wanted £250 per 1 Gb module.

I'd stick to XP. Don't get me wrong, I think Windows 7 is excellent, but with your system I don't think you'll notice any difference. So save yourself the cash and put it towards an upgrade in the future :)

You can use Win7 for free until April I think. Try it out, personally I think its brilliant - everything simply works as it should.

Agreed.

But then again, Win7 RETAIL is low low price. I tw ill last until your next build. It goes up in price soon . . . .

to be honest if i upgrade the whole system i won't be able to afford another OS at that time which mean i'll be stuck on DX9 but if i get win7 i could use DX10/10.1 until i get a DX11 card it's swings and roundabouts me thinks
