As title really. i've got a spare e2180 lying around and figure i may as well remove the IHS as i can't get it over 3gig. it's easy to do on the e2180's as they have a rubber seal and that's it, like the a64's.

However, i understand that because of CPU will now be thinner the HS+Fan might not make contact with the die's. Has anyone tried this with the standard "push-pin" cooler?

Removing the IHS on an intel cpu is no easy ride - gone are the days when the cores were attached with 'regular' tim.

Im sure ive seen a picture of the result of removing the IHS on a current C2D, The core was ripped away iirc.
the e21xx's are as easy as a a64, anything above that uses a solder which attatches to the die, so is nearly impossible. but the e21xx's just use rubber and is easy; so it's not an issue.

The retention plate issue could be a real problem :S as even with a screw-able cooler you couldn't fix that... hmmm :/ is it worth it for another .2ghz :S
