If you built a computer to last 5 years...

A CPU should last for years without causing lack of performance.

I would personally upgrade my graphics card if required, but I am happy with at least 30 FPS performance on high+ settings so with my 7850 I think I wont have to upgrade for a while :)

Well this is the argument I'm having in my head at the moment. It's not just for gaming. I'll be encoding videos too.. But the thing is, I could just use a i5 and it would take slightly longer.

Main uses are work (Word, Visual Studio, MATLAB), gaming and encoding/video editing in that order.

I would agree with my mate Idleman. You have to remember that you have quicksync for video encoding (providing your software supports it). I did a 2 pass encode of a 2hour dvd movie on a SB i5 2500K (4.4Ghz), on the fly from the dvd drive in 20mins!!

The offers change tomoz so what we spec might well change but I would make a few changes to your spec and aim for something like this

easy, wait till the xbox 720 has been out for 6~ months and then buy the best hardware on the market.

Should easily last another 5 years of terrible console ports

i7 920 D0>*

Quick ninja edit in the spec, i see.:D

The Q6600 has been out about 5 years and ive just replaced mine with a 3570k but only because the motherboard packed in rather than anything beign wrong with the CPU,

The only thing Ive upgraded in that time is the Graphics card and ive changed the keyboard and mouse because the both packed in.

Other than adding extra storage with both internal harddrives, external harddrives and a NAS drive every thing stayed as it was when I first built the computer.

Im hoping the same will happen with the system Ive got not, ill upgrade the graphics but that will be it realy.

My i7 is almost 3 years old now, the only upgrade it has had is 4890->6850. Plays everything fine at 1920x1200.
