Man of Honour
Unfortunately I think having the speed limit above 80 would really put the **** up nervous/old/incompotent drivers.
And lots more boy racers will be killing themselves.

retarded 20 zones and stupid 50mph on old NSL roads in the country
also ban lorries from anything but inside lane on dual carriageways
Add 10mph to every speed limit except around schools.
Change motorway from "overtaking lanes" to 70and under.. 80mph.. 80-120mph

Based on my experience of UK roads motorways could use condition/time based variable limits with harsher penalties.
That is, poor conditions/heavy traffic usage sees a lowering of the limit to less than 70 when appropriate.
Good conditions, low traffic volume would see the limit increased beyond 70, perhaps even unrestricted on the better motorways where volume is low.
Breaking either limit should carry harsher penalties however.
As always, irrespective of limits the UK needs a comprehensive review of driver training and the levels required to obtain a licence. It's far too simple and far too easy as of now.

Interesting. Two pages of replies and no one has suggested some actual research be done to find out what impact different speed limits would have, just a bunch of opinions? Congrats - you are all the government.
What are these "limits" you speak of?

Same here. Also some sections of road that have been stuck with a 50 limit where there is no logical reason.
We are OcUK motors and have the most elite opinion on everything. Research is not required.
The Autobahn has no limit and that works fine. Why can't we have even near to that.. Such as 100 MPH.
Most people on the motorway already do more then 70.

Do excuse my ignorance. So to summarise the words of enlightenment in this thread...
The new speed limit will be 30, unless its outside a school in which case its walking pace, unless its a secondary school in which case its 90 (Natural selectino). If the school is on a dual carridgeway, its 70, unless there is no a central reservation, in which case its 60, unless its during the summer holidays in which case its 90. Easter holiday its 85, because this holiday moves and people will get it wrong. And killed.
Motorways, its a default of 90-120, depending on the mood of the variable speed limit operator. If there are clouds its 20, and if theres fog you should pull over. Snipers will be deployed to eliminate lorry drivers who dare to overtake each other and nervous drivers will directed into the hard shoulder to await death. Boy racers will be encouraged to drive at 90 (Or 95 if they have an induction kit) at all times and in all weather, on the condition that they only crash into each other.
Have I missed anything?
