If you had to choose: VR HMD or UHD F/G-sync hi refresh monitor?

With 2 or 3 VR headsets soon to be launched, coinciding with the release of new generation 21:9 & UHD monitors, I'm sure many people will be conflicted as to which to choose as many will be unable to buy both.

IMHO, as everyone already has a conventional monitor, I'd expect VR HMDs to take off: at least initially due to sheer novelty value. OTOH it might take a few years for superwide & super hi-res 144hz & 'sync' screens to stabilise in price & gpus need to catch up with the increase in pixels.

On the 3rd hand, initial HMDs are bound to have problems, as all 'bleeding edge' products do (witness the disappointment in the forums about new curved, *sync and/or UHD monitors)...

Can't see VR taking off quite like that - just doesn't have the convenience, etc. of a normal monitor.

Might set something up for racing games specifically.

I have both a UHD and 21:9 displays as well as my Swift and even if 120+Hz came out for 4K type resolutions I can't see myself moving from 2560x1440@120+Hz for gaming.

these first gen HMD's still don't have a high enough resolution IMO, having tried a DK2 I am really on the fence as to whether I will bother... reviews of the DK2 said it was it was really good and that the reviewer found it immersive, however I just found it a blurry dotty mess that was completely unusable... hands on reviews so far of Crescent Bay, which was for all intents and purposes the same setup as the consumer version / HTC Vive, say that it is a step above the DK2, but not a huge leap, so I really can't see that they will be that great... if supply is really constrained like with the DK2 then I may well get in the queue for a Vive with the idea of selling on at full price if I don't like it

and yeah, as Rroff says, they will be good for games like racing or flight sims, but not for anything like FPS I don't think
