Did you just get an email like this?

Dear Mr <snip>

We are writing with regard to your recent order for The International Motor Show in London.

Due to a processing error we neglected to charge you the £1.65 transaction fee referred to during your booking.

In order to correct this error we will be charging your account £1.65 on the 1st September 2006. This will appear on your statement as Event Tickets 0871 220 0260 as per the original order.

We do apologise for any inconvenience caused and hope you enjoyed the show.

Best regards,

I'm just wondering how widespread this is - and are they actually allowed to do that?!

If it was originally stated there would be an admin fee, and it wasn't charged, then yes, they are more than entitled to do that.

I got that e-mail too. I am e-mailing them back tomorrow telling them to get bent. If they take it then I'm phoning my bank and cancelling it. I did a transaction which they agreed to and it's done, they can't just decide to take more money at a later date.

My reply

No, you will not be charging that to my account. Any attempt to take the £1.65 will result in me contacting my bank and cancelling it. I entered into a transaction with you to buy tickets, the price was set by you and we agreed. The transaction is now complete. You cannot and will not just decide to add on another fee after the event.

There's absolutely no mention of it in the confirmation email that they sent out...

If the terms of the original transaction (which you must have agreed to) included this £1.65, then they are quite within their rights.

My what a fool you are. If it is even hinted in the original Ts & Cs that you entered into when you purchased the tickets, they are legally within their rights to take the £1.65 from you.

And just because it's only £1.65, don't think they will let it be if you do cancel the transaction. You WILL be receiving some very unpleasant letters.

This is what my confirmation e-mail said

Dear MR LONG TERM AIDS SUFFERER,

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

You have booked to attend MOTOR SHOW-TUE 25TH at ExCeL London, London on TUESDAY 25/07/2006 at 9.30

You have ordered the following tickets

Reference 13882055 - 1 ADULT at £ 8.00
Reference 13882056 - 1 13.00-13.30HRS MOTOR THEATRE at £ 5.00

You have been charged £ 13.00 and this will appear on your statement as 'EVENT TICKETS'
Sorry, what was that? I agreed to pay £13 for the tickets.

I don't give a toss about the money, it's the principle.

I don't see much about adding costs on in their T&C here...

While obviously I can't comment on booking Motorshow Tickets, I have just ran through the purchase procedure on another event, and guess what, it states quite clearly there is a "Transaction Fee".

IF this wasn't there (I have used the word "if" in almost all my posts, as I am willing to admit I haven't a clue, I didn't purchase tickets), then no they can't take money from you. IF it was there, they can take it.

Yeah well that's where they win as I can't remember what the site said at the time and I obviously don't have a screenshot of it :|
