DDR3 (costly but lets face it, its the future) ;)
PCI-e 2.0
Newer chipset
Imature Bios :(
£120 - £200

I have around £160 for a budget and will be running Q6600 GO moving to Penryn next year.
I am a heavy gamer, so anything I can do to futurproof (ha..chance would be a fine thing) I will look to do.

I already have my 22" Samsung Pebble 2232BW in transit and my 8800GT will arrive tomorrow, but this is proving my most difficult decision.....and probably one of the most important, advice appreciated.

I don't see why you say that it will soon be viewed as fully superceded?
For DDR2 X38 doesn't bring much extra to the table & is dearer.
Yes, it's introduction no doubt will depress P35 prices but superceded, no I don't see that at all.

X38 Or wait a wee bit for the X48 to come out.
Let me know what you think of the new monitor m8 as im looking at this model for gaming. :)

Perhaps I was a bit previous in my judgement, I meant it will become superceded shortly, erroded by X38 and fully superceded by X48.
As always I look at medium to long term with these things, i.e. I dont want to buy into a technology for 2 months then have to reinvest in the next, if I could have bought into it from the outset.

I don't think I can wait until X48 to come out (Q1 2008 I have heard ??) so for me the next best thing is X38 with DDR3....in the long term, short term DDR2 would be better due to price, but I would be restricting myself to future upgrade path by going DDR2 now, when DDR3 is there to be had.
I hope this makes a little more sense? lol :p

I love my Pebble :)

I used to use the 19" Samsung 913n before it and I have never had an issue with tn panels. The pebble is connected via a DVI cable and works fantastic with beautiful colours which are very rich and vibrant.

The only issue that I had was a lazy red pixel that was starting to stick. A quick prod with some pressure whilst switching the screen on and off soon sorted that one.

Am I glad to have bought this TFT..? - A big yes from me :)

I was tempted by the 24" Sammy. But I didn't want to spend another £100 or so. I haven't really got the room on my desktop. The 1680x1050 is more than adequate for my 8800GTS.

well, you could always go for a DDR2/3 combo like P5KC or P35C-DS3R.
Alternatively, given current DDR3 prices it's not impossible that you could buy a DDR2 setup now & a DDR3 one (no doubt with X48 or another new chipset) in a year's time when DDR3 prices will have fallen for the same (or cheaper ) overall price as going DDR3 now ...

Funnily enough I am reading the specs and opinions on these as you were typing your reply....it makes sense but can't find that much info on the Gigabyte board.

am I right in thinking that this RAM
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-058-GL

Will go well in the Gigabyte P35C-DS3R ?

For now I will just want put the build together, simply plug in the Go Q6600, 4 Gig of GeIL PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ram and hit the power button !!
I will then set about some OC goodness :)

Best to go for X38 surely? PCI-E 2.0; I know it's not much of a 'feature' atm but it's better than not having it. I wouldn't bother with DDR3 atm though, waste of money, £700 for 4GB plus it'll only really be best used with 1600Mhz FSB Penryns. The combo boards are okay, but the memory controllers are flaky because P35 isn't designed to have DDR2/3 enabled at the same time.

yeah, just read this and it put me back to square one. :(

Its a terrible time to upgrade I know...but I have a buyer for my current box (just the box for £400):cool:
So I need to sort it in the next week or so.

I like the look of the DFI LP UT P35-T2R but its pricy at £169 and its only P35 !

Get that:

I'm sure you've already seen it, but X38, DDR2 and a (half) decent price can't be too bad. I honestly would go for PCI-E 2.0 instead of P35, especially as the two other new chipsets coming out (nForce 780i and AMD 790FX) support it; it would be a bit pointless going for the one chipset that doesn't.

EDIT: Plus, I don't really abide by this "mature chipset" talk, especially as a lot of the people in these forums (and computer enthusiasts in general) are snapping up brand new 8800GT GPU's and different stepping CPU's as soon as they come out with not much inclination as to how they clock, performance ratings, etc. You don't need to wait six months before it's 'acceptable' to buy a motherboard based on a new chipset. It'll mature with bios updates obviously..end of.

there's nothing that needs PCI-E 2.0 nor is there likely to be for some considerable time.

It's patently obvious to me that you could buy a DDR2 motherboard now and throw it away in a year's time when DDR3 hits a sensible price and you'd still be quids-in.

Abit IP35-Pro or Gigabyte P35-DS4 V1.0 would be my two options - spend the money saved on better cooling or on an even better graphics card and play!

I have a 512mg 8800GT and 22" Sammy Pebble winging thier way to me as I type....I am just dithering (I think is the right way to describe my mental state) on the Mobo and Ram...and the case.....less so here as I think the Akasa Eclipe is more of a no brainer now :D

Edit:
Since I am an Intel noob....if I were to get the Abit IP35 Pro and Q6600 Go and add to it the 4 Gig (2X GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit) would it all just fire up with everything at stock or does it take a little work to get it all working ?
As this RAM isn't listed in the official thread :http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17739133
