If your a gamer, what's the point in upgrading to Sandy Bridge?

Can't see anything that will claw my Q6600 from my rig tbh. I use S3 sleep all the time - my PC is ready to go before my monitor wakes up. And to be honest, most new games aren't a patch on older ones like CSS and Quake 3/Live and the various emus I use (nullDC, Project 64) My 5850 sits at about 15% usage in most of my gaming...

I have only just upgraded to a Q6600 & DFI Lan Party 45 chipset mobo. :D
S'pose i'll get to Sandybridge in 5 years or so. :p

Planning on keeping my I7 and 5850 for a while then. IF things start to strugle, I'll add another In crossfire - doubt I'll need it though.

I'm very interested in what kind of effect nicely clocked SBs will have on the minimum framerate of Arma2. It is perhaps the only game I play where my Q6600 seems to present a bottleneck.

Had my q6600 rig for over 3 years. And its done a great job. Dont really need to get rid of it but my nephew needs a pc. So thats enough of an excuse to get a new rig. Roll on january 9th.

This line of thought that games are only GPU intensive is coming to a close.

In my opinion Black Ops (despite being a bad port/and full of bugs) was a sign that developers are now starting to code with mutli core processors in mind. Upon release most people with less than 4 cores struggled with BO regardless of whether you had a GTX580 or a HD3850!

Whilst I agree we can still bypass SB its not going to be long (give it 1/2 years) before multithreaded games mean cpu is as/if not more important as a good gpu.

I going to wait until AMD Bulldozer is released to upgrade my Q6600. This way you can compare performance of both the new architectures and if they are competitive with each other it will hopefully mean lower priced CPUs! :)

+1

Hell, I need to just upgrade anyway - P4 can't even manage 720p playback xD

If you're already rocking and rolling with a I5/7 setup at the moment, little point realistically.

*BUT* I'm going to upgrade as I've got a Q6600. I could wait until Bulldozer, but frankly, someone is willing to buy my current parts off me for 100 (ram, CPU, motherboard) and I just want to get shot of it.

This is all well and good for people with quad core machines, I am still running a C2D 3Ghz, for me sandy bridge at 4.5 Ghz would be a really big increase!
This is where I sit too. I'm coming from a C2D @ 4Ghz (overclock slowly dying) so Sandy Bridge will be a big jump.

Agreed and this was originally my plan when I was running dual-cores in both my machines - go quad with Sandy Bridge.

In the end I upgraded to a Core 2 Quad in both rigs and, as a result, a move to Sandy Bridge is looking a lot less beneficial tbh.

I have E6600 at the moment at stock 2.6Ghz, so looking forwards to my quad sandy bridge, which i will be OC'ing. Also my sister needs a new pc and this one will do just fine for her as the only game she plays is the sims 3 from time to time.

Plus i got a new job in sep and have been saving up since then so it better be decent or i might aswell have had an i5 760 a few months ago lol. Hopefully get an UEFI mobo though, looks cool.

A friend is letting me use his old 5870 to Xfire with mine but my MB doesnt support Xfire. Instead of buying a new 775 MB I May as well spend a bit extra and get sandy bridge :)

My own personal take on all this is that a gpu has a ~2 year life cycle and a cpu has ~4 years... with regards to playing games and remaining at the higher end.

Yeah, I agree with this, I have one of the first release version i7 920 C0/C1, it's two years old and still running smooth with everything I've thrown at it thus far so it's eol in my books is still another year or two away.

I upgraded my ram from 3 to 6GB and replaced my gpu, HD 4850 to HD 6950, so I could go for a nice lil eyefinity set up.

I think if my cpu starts struggling I'll just start overclocking ^^

This, there as an article a while back that tested this and it showed that there was a liniear increase in frames the more the CPU was over clocked. So for me, if I can get 4.5Ghz + out of the 2600k I'll upgrade having skipped the current crop of i7s.

Only went i7 5-6 months ago, so will probably miss out sandy. Will probably end up with the next gen of gfx cards also. Currently have a 5850 so am in no hurry to upgrade at the moment! Am soon watercooling my i7, so going to see how far it goes :D.

Been on an i7 rig for 16 months ono, i can see me skipping SB as well, the i7 itself is way overkill for any game im playing, though ill upgrade the gpu's at some point in the future. Saying that though, there isnt much currently that sli 470's cant cope with.

I'm just going to wait until the next gen consoles are released or something dies seeing as nothing really uses my i7 or my GTX 470
