Iiyama PLE2201W-B1 better than samsung pebble?????

I have never heard of Iiyama. Are they any good?

Time for a history lesson.

Iiyama used to be one of the best CRT monitor makers a decade ago. I remember in 1998, when I wanted the best 15" crt that money could buy (Sony). I couldnt justify the £222 expense, so I plumped for the 2nd best 15" CRT at the time - Iiyama - priced at around £180. I was very happy with this unit and it was miles better than the generic displays found in offices/homes at the time.

A few years later, Mitsibushi emerged as a great CRT monitor maker. They had one of the best 21" CRT monitors around. They were going toe-to-toe with Sony, but this was the time that Iiyama gradually began to go backwards. Iiyama seemed to be concentrating a lot on the budget market now, leaving Sony and Mitsubishi to fight for the premium segment.

Soon after, TFT monitors started to go mainstream and at first Iiyama seemed to be holding their own, but gradually found themselves struggling to keep pace with their main competitors - Sony (as normal) and the emergence of Dell. Eventually, over the years, I have noticed that Iiyama have almost vanished and become a bit part player in world of PC monitors. Dell are still holding their own and Samsung really seem to be selling a lot of their panels, either under their own brand name or via 3rd party manufacturers.

10 yrs ago, if you wanted a monitor and had money, the top of your shortlist would have the names, Sony and Iiyama on it. In 2007, if you have money to spend on a monitor, Iiyama is not the name you would reserve on your shortlist. Dell, Samsung and even Benq have overtaken Iiyama in terms of reputation.

As for the PLE2201W-B1, I have no idea. :)

I'm totally confused - isn't the pebble a mobile phone and Iiyama the makers of some damn fine monitors in the past?

I still am using an iiyama CRT from the mid nineties and absolutly love it.

edit k I'm a nub.

So you have absolutely no idea about the quality of Iiyamas current products (apart from a crt 10 years ago) and are basing your opinion off how big the brands appear to you currently? Come on...

To the OP:

I bought two Iiyama ProLite E431s for use as dual monitors about 4 years ago now and i am still using them to this day. My experience with Iiyama has probably been the best i have ever had with anything to do with electronic equipment. I bought both monitors at exactly the same time and both arrived absolutely pixel perfect, not to mention them being stunning screens, i cant fault them at all. They worked perfectly for 2 years until they both developed the same fault within a week, i contacted Iiyama and they explained that it was a known fault with the screen, which now had a fix and they would swap them out with no problems, a couple of days later a courier arrived with two, what appeared to be new (updated) screens, and removed the faulty screens, the new screens were also pixel perfect. I couldnt be happier with the product or the service.

I also now happen to work with some of their even newer products and can say they are of the same quality.

Brands like Dell and Samsung may have established themselves as bigger brand names, but Iiyama have stayed true to their product and are still making excellent screens, but most of all providing excellent customer service.

Yeh your right the screen is quality. I hadn't of heard iiyama before because (here is my excuse) 10 years ago I was in high school so had no money, then went to uni and just used my comp for word/excel and never bought any comp products for years :). Im 24 now so am back in that habbit (not the hat that nuns wear :p)

How much was the Iiyama and what product(s) are you effectively comparing it with, ie. what was your previous monitor?

Apart from the size advantage over the Viewsonic, does the Iiyama offer better image quality or would you say they are the same? Did the Iiyama have any dead pixels that you can make out?

IT has no dead pixels.

I would say it has better colours and greater depth in colour reproduction. I dont notice any input lag or ghosting.

Good to hear.

Just checked and the Iiyama is priced at around £220. This compares with the Samsung Pebble available on this site for £223+del. So, they seem to be priced similarly.

I am interested in this model too. It would be great to get some pics of it in use. Also, does it do 1:1 pixal mapping? Do any 22" monitors do it?

I used to have a lovely Iiyama 19" crt. fantastic.

My work pc has a Iiyama PLE something, cant remember exact model. and i love it, the colour isn't great but to be honest unless you spend a lot of moeny no 19" tft has great colour (since there Tn panels!).

I couldnt comment on the samsung but all i will say is you will not be disapointed :) at all

*edit*

you've already got it, go me for being slow and un able to read!

I can imagine. I bought a Sony 19" CRT in 2000, which I am still using today, for £450 . If I didnt have the money for it, I wouldve opted for a Iiyama.

Ok, so what screens dont use the TN panels? What would be the best non-TN panel in the 20"-24" range?

You've left my comfort zone, im honestly not sure. Theres a few people around here that will be able to point you in the right direction. they'll find this thread shortly im sure :)

yeah my iiyama was from my uncle, he paid a lot for it. Then it got some nasty ghosting type problem thing. anyway i dumped it only to be told it still had warranty! gutted!
