illegal to cycle on the pavement in london?

:)

yeah your bike is nice wanna trade? here's mine :P

I was thinking of a bike like that...are the brakes on the bar end thingies?

I havne't tried one with bar ends yet, can i add them to my current bike? I've seen them around for pretty cheap. Do they go over the grips on the handlebars or would i need a wider handle bar?

Do you have a backpack to carry things?

And i don't see myself in lycra clothing as of yet... I've looked at cycling clothes and there are baggy cycling shorts? Tried em?
I do get rather sweaty... :P Especially when i'm wearing a back pack too..i won't go into that!

this is a good idea...to dry the..

Brakes and gear shifters are those two black levers, the largest is the brake, other is the shifter. You can't see them, but on the other side is a thumb lever for down.

Those are Campagnolo, Shimano have two different types. Soras are similar to Campag with the thumb shifter, but Tiagra and up have different brake for one up, and brake+inner lever for down. (in all cases you push them towards the tyre)

MTB bar ends will be around a tenner, depending on your grip/bar spacing and bar end attachment, probably need to cut off the end on your grips. I don't like them though, as your hands are away from the brake levers.

I don't like baggy cycling clothes, when going at speed they flap around. I do carry a small backpack with a water reservoir but in this weather I go back to waterbottle and carry the rest in the cycling jersey pouch (repair kit and keys) If you carry a lot weightwise (ie more than three 2 litre bottles) I would get panniers

Bah, it's pointless. Suffice to say, cycling across a junction on a green light is *always* safer than cycling across it on a red, by definition. And yes, I live and have cycled in london and know exactly what the worst traffic can be like. Also, if you crash into me on my bike whilst turning left without using your mirrors and cause injury, I will prosecute you, if the police don't get there first. It's dangerous driving.

ROFL :D :D Please give a source for that statistic, I don't believe it for a second.

I can't give you a source, it's annecdotal from the charity work I occasionally do with the RNIB.

In my opinion, most cyclists are a danger to themselves and others but becuase they feel that they have some sort of moral high-ground by being eco-friendly it's all ok and they can do what they like.

Anyone who goes though a pedestrian crossing when the green light is on deserves an umbrella in the spokes.

Oh, and to the guy who mentioned prosecuting anyone who turned left without checking their mirror; try proving it.

If I'd overtaken you I would ensure I was clear of you, but if I were in slow moving traffic and you undertook me whilst I was signalling then I'm afraid that you wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

progress update! That 2 hr journey is now a 1hr journey! :)

I'm jealous of the uber cyclists, there was a guy on the dual carriage way standing at traffic and as soon as the cars pulled off he stood up and accelerated as fast as the cars in front

one day....one day :)

*i was going up a hill and a v.v.old man overtook me!*

Just a stupid rule tbh. Im 15 and me and my mate got pulled by the police and threatened a fine of 20 quid if we were seen riding on pavement again. Theres also hardly any cycle paths around, and I almost got hit a lot of times. I think people riding on the pavements is less dangerous and it is a dumb rule :p

OT- Ja3h, ever remember me form a while ago on your MSN ;) The one who showed you ***** :p Where ya been on MSN lately, and also, we have the same number of posts!

put some mudguards on it, much faster then the mtb i had. Ordered a rack for it too, but i think i'll be getting a road bike and cycle to uni when term starts! :D

not on pavements now!!

That's a good bike (for Halfords) Shame grip shifters though. :( It'll be nippier than the FS bike at least. Perhaps in a couple of years get a roadbike with drops. :)

yeah i managed to pick it up second hand for less than 100, whats the problem with gripshifters? they're more comfortable to use right? I'm going to try to cycle to uni tomorrow - 22km's!

i bought a casual cycling jersey...its great! :D much better than a normal tshirt! going to get some cycling undershorts!

Make sure you check everything over, Halfords are well known to build it incorrectly and leave things loose (in one case handlebars and front wheel!)

I personally don't like grip shifters, had both and I prefer thumb shifters.

thanks man, i've checked it over seems fine, been cycling 15km's today. I did have to tighten the handlebars and reroute the rear brake. I'm all set now, got mudguards, a rear rack is on its way and got a good set of cat eye lights for a good price. I've also bought some bar ends and i'm not sure how to fit them tbh!

a little advice please! pic to follow.

You need to cut off correct amount for the bar ends to fit onto the handlebars, then fit bar end plugs onto them.

any idea where i can get some bar end plugs from? :)

edit: looked on the bay, all i can find are "carbon effect" ones! :(

That's a bit mean. I would have thought it would make more sense to attempt to dismount them if they crossed when the lights were red and the little man was green.

Just to fan the flames - Pedstrians that cross anywhere other than at a prescribed location and time should have their toes removed by rabid bears.

Jaywalking isn't illegal in this country. If it was then fair play, I'll bring the bears.

Yup twice now pedastrians crossed road (not pedastrian/zebra crossing) without even looking L&R, walking slowly...coming up to them and unsure they'll see me and either run forward or step back. Idiots.

i've regularly been closing to getting knocked down at a crossing becasue cyclists can't be bothered to stop, traffic lights apply to you too fools.

personally i think the law is fine, where i am in london (live is victoria, work in the city) i don't really see cyclists on the pavement. Places like covent garden seem to attract them though.

i might cycle if we had showers at work but to be honest, after 11 hours of troubleshooting routing issues, sitting on the circle line for 20 minutes seems a much better option
