I'm back from my travels!

How much did you spend in the 14 months? I'm putting together a 6-9 month trip at the mo and it's tough ball parking budgets..
Not sure I could help much - I really got around and it REALLY depends where you are going. I spent time in Europe, Middle East, North Africa, East Africa, India, SEA, Australia, New Zealand, finished in New York as a end of trip celebration.

I basically lived on as little as I reasonable could (third class in India is always fun). I travelled overland as much as possible and only flew when absolutely necessary. Four months in Australia and NZ really killed the budget though - doubled what I had spent up to that point (including all flights etc).

As a basis though, I reckon I spent about £400 a month in South East Asia. Can be done for less, but I stayed in good (but basic) hostels. So that much, all in, will get you around that area no problems.

Hope that helps a little?

Impressed With you going traveling on your own, takes a certain person to do it solo, even though your never solo for long i'm thinking, People with a common bond soon meet up. Not many people can do it that way. Can imagine the downer your going to be on at times now as well, Just perk your self up with plans for your next get away from the restrictions of life in a concrete jungle.

In july Me and a mate are off doing the Mongol Rally, 6 weeks 10,000 miles and aprox 17 countries, chose the route to take us through Western europe, Eastern Europe, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan,Tajikistan,Kyrgyzstan, back into Kaz then Russia/siberia then finish off doing southern Mongolia route skirting the Gobi desert and finishing in Ulan Bator the capitol. I can't wait to go and am already dreading coming back to the routine of modern life :)

Bet doing your trip made you feel "truely alive" at times. Congrats..

Helps a bit, I'm planning to travel from Brighton to the southern tip of India overland via silk route, Tibet and Nepal. I'm thinking it'll end up around £5k+. Central Asia is surprisingly expensive!

damn lucky you and welcome back... I wish I did something like this before or could do something this now.
It definitely suits certain types of people/personalities.. you definitely have to be a social "people" person to be able to do it.

Now thats an awesome trip.6 weeks is a proper amount of time to do it in as well though youve got a lot of extra distance through tajikstan and kyrgyzstan to fit in. Just take it easy and dont let the problems fluster you and let things slide and its amazing. Make sure your aircon works too!!!

I would love to do that! how much is that costing you guys? The past few years i have done road trip through europe with my best mate, and this was one we wanted to do one day!

Its so easy, i don't think you have to be that much of a people person, i met plenty that were quiet happy to travel alone and stay alone as thats what they wanted. I loved the meeting people part of it!

Within 2 weeks of getting there i was in a crew of 20 other solo travellers for xmas on Koh Tao and then moved all 20 of us to Koh Phangan for NYE it was amazing having such an awesome group! Expecially when it was 5 guys and 15 ladies :)

Guy I work with left to went travelling September last year. He came back last month, got suicidal being here and left a few weeks ago with the plan of moving to South America permanently. Traveling certainly must do something to you. I wish I can find the time to do something like this.

I can agree with that. I spent two weeks a year in Greece and I swear I want to cry when I get back to Gatwick/Heathrow and see a sea of football jerseys infront of me at passport control.

Funny thing is that I can totally afford to go travel, it's just do I risk giving up my flat, sticking my stuff in storage and bumming it for 6 months. Job I can always come back to as I'm self employed.

Hmm, wish I was more spontaneous. :(

The longer you leave it the harder it gets. I've set the date for when I'm going off so just got to plan the trip and get the funds :).

same as me, I'm self employed also which makes it easy! however, it took me along time to grow the balls to do it! My mate at work got me drunk and presented me with great arguments, i sat in the pub with my iPad looked for flights and booked it there and then! 9 days later i was on a plane!

defo worth doing.

Don't plan it! Plan a start destination see who you meet and see what you fancy doing when your there! i didn't plan anything apart from getting the BKK on 9th December! By the time my flight home was up it was a simple decision to change it to a date 5 weeks later ;)

Dunno if I'm too old. I'm 31. Don't want to be the old pervert amongst 'Gap Yah' 18-19yo's. :p

one of the guys i was with for 6 weeks i met in koh tao, he's 37! first time travelling alone, and was a perfect fit with all of us! the 20 of us ranged from 22 up to 37! never to young!

Sounds like it's all planned out for you mate! Go for it! :)

I want to do exactly this... basically Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Australia. Funds should not be a problem as tbh for 3 months of fun £5000 (including flights) is not that much!

It's just work that's the problem... 3 months off work is hard and I don't want to leave the job, go for 3 months and come back unemployed, especially since I love the job I am currently in!

I might do a shortish 2 to 3 weeks travelling on my own in the autumn... not sure where to though. As i am planning on going to Thailand in May with a friend.

THis is my biggest worry.. losing my job especially as I have a mortgage to pay. I should have done the travelling before when i was younger and did not have my own place.

Over the past 2 yeas i have spent around 8 months abroad; 3 months in Africa in 2010 and 3 months working as a diver in Greece last year. In 2 months or so I will be going back to Greece until September spending every day diving and going out, happy times :D

Good to know :)

I've done a couple small trips on my own (2 weeks china, 5 days Prague) but I'm putting together a 6 month trip starting Feb from Brighton to India overland and can't wait!

I really want to do this trip after university in a few years time, make sure you do a write-up when you finish! Are you going southwards through Iran/Balochistan or around the top (Uzbekistan etc)? I have been intending to do the southerly route but I will have to see how the security situation changes.
