I'm buying a MSI 7970 Lightning this friday and need help.

Yes that cable that has 2pins loose when combined together would give you 1 of the 2 8pin connections for the 7970. However, you only have 1 other 6pin PCI-E cable and therefore don't have enough to make up the 2 you'd require to connect into the adapter cable shown above to combine 2 6pin PCI-E cables to make 1 more 8pin for the 2nd connection onto the gfx card. In short I think you need a better PSU so that you have 300W of power via PCI-E connections to supply the gfx card.

So I'm short one cable?

So what PSU should I buy? I only have maybe £65 to £70 to spend If I have too? So you're saying the 7970 Lightning is too much for my PSU?

the pic shows he only has 2 x 6 pin

there are no 2 pins loose thats a solid 8 pin connector with only 6 pins used

How bizarre!!!

Ive never seen a 8 pin connection that you get with the psu only have 6 cables.

Its only 75 watts if it only has 6 cables. With this info id defo get a new psu

This is what id get if it were me

super stable power down one rail. it has 2 x 8pin and 2 x 6pin so plenty for all your needs without drawing to many watts from the wall.

Would that fit in my cit vantage case

What if I just got another cable like the one of my gpu I have now? would the psu still be ok for the card or not?

personally I think ocz psu are total crap. I put one in my kids machine same one as yours I think and it lasted a month.

I have seen others suffer the same fate in the forums as well and would no way trust it with a £300 graphics card. and a million percent no with the wrong cables

On paper it should deliver but in reality I dont think it delivers a stable 600 watts 100% of the time. My answer would be no way

I'm guessing you were looking at the original picture which I'm guessing is the only 6pin PCI-E with an 8pin PSU connection block utilising only 6pins. The one I was referring to was the one shown attached to the existing card with the separate 2pin connection hanging loose.

I see mate

if it comes out the supply on 6 cables It could have 20 pins on the other end its still only 75 watts.

No problem buddy :)

That xfx psu is made by seasonic inside (best psu maker there is)
has one large rail which is great for gaming instead of power split over 5 rails
has a very high power factor which means it wastes very little saving you money

I have the 1000w xfx platinum in mine and its the dogs bol locks ;-)

After all this and because of the PSU I can't afford the 7970 lightning:( It's a little over my budget. So I guess I'll have to get the MSI 7950 TFIII instead. I should still be happy with the speeds after reading reviews.
