I'm getting 10MB/s write speed on a Samsung F3 over USB2 - slow?

Should it be faster than that? Its a 2TB drive. Its taking 3 hours to transfer a single 60GB image file onto the NTFS formatted drive
 
You're not gonna get higher than 30-40 MB/s sustained transfer rates over USB 2.0 but yes, 10 MB/s seems slow. Are you using your USB bus for anything else during transfer? You could try connecting it to a different port.
 
Its a macbook pro, i think the ports are identical, but it is connected direct.

I know the F4 drives need special formatting for full speed, but i thought the F3 would just perform.
 
I would try connecting it to a USB port in another Mac or a PC just to see if the transfer rate problem is to do with your laptop's ports or the drive/caddy.
 
10MB/s is terrible, with USB 2.0 you can get close to 60MB/s.

Do you have any other devices sapping your USB bandwidth?

Try a different port.
