iPhone 4.
Feeling of quality. Great screen.

Desire, it has the best software experience on Android due to HTC Sense and the extra horsepower of the Galaxy S isn't put to use on anything other than benchmarking applications.
The Galaxy S also feels as plastic as the toy phone that my 10 month old niece was bought from Mothercare.
Functionality > feeling of quality, in a phone anyway.
The iPhone 4 has both.

I'm afraid that's where you're misinformed because you've obviously not used a Desire at all, or have not used one for long enough.
I was an iPhone user and unlike most, I actually use my phones extensively for social use and business use.
The email client on the Desire is much more robust, can send and receive meeting requests and set out of office messages. I couldn't do this on the iPhone and there's a bug with receiving meeting requests on the iPhone too (in certain conditions).
The Desire can also play flash content, the iPhone can't and never will most likely.
You also need to jailbreak your iPhone in order to install WiFi hotspot applications from unauthorised application stores in order to tether via WiFi. The Desire has this built in, even without root, and it doesn't require you to pay your carrier any more to use it unlike with the iPhone.
The Desire, also has free SatNav via Google Maps and has much better social site integration with the contacts on the phone, such as being able to load a contacts Facebook & Flickr photos directly from the contacts application.
I can sync my data for free with Google services, that are available from my computer and phone, I don't have to pay for MobileMe.
I can also push content to my phone via the Google Cloud.
Without Jailbreaking your phone, you can't install any application to your iPhone that Apple don't approve. You'll never had Mobile Firefox because Mozilla refuse to have to use Apples slow JScript engine (which all 3rd party web browsers have to). V8 JScript engine, think I'll have a bit of that with the Desire with WebKit (the default web browser).

I can hold my phone anyway I want, in either hand without having to encase it with some rubber bumper
Overall, there's more functionality on the HTC Desire than there is on an iPhone out of the box and guess what? The HTC Desire can be had for cheaper too.
Want me to go on?
Tell me, how long did you own your Desire for, and how long have you owned your iPhone?
Sorry to hijack but thread has convinced me, want to switch my 3GS to an Android. When is the HTC Desire HD scheduled to release here?
Also, I use my iPhone as a MP3 player, hows the functionality on the Desire? Or is it worth buying a seperate MP3 played for such needs.

That is one area the iPhone trounces the Desire in.
I love the iPod UI of iPhones and the sound quality is probably better (not sure though as I'm not an audiophile and don't have both to hand for comparison).
I also really liked iTunes for syncing and the HTC Software doesn't come close in my opinion![]()
I currently have the iPhone 4 and the HTC Desire (among other phones).
I can pretty much agree with everything you say there, the Desire will do a lot more than the iPhone 4, but it wont do everything quite as well.
Key things the iPhone 4 does better -
The iPhone really falls short when it comes to depth of software, it is very constrained.
- Camera/HD Video
- The screen is far better than an SLCD screen, I also prefer to it AMOLED
- Better selection of Apps, but its not as majorly better as many people would have you believe
- Battery is the best smartphone battery I have experienced in recent years, it is excellent
- Feels better built and a bit more quality, but its not an issue really
- Memory built in (16/32GB) that easily helps to justify the extra price to an extent
I also don't feel that iOS is much more polished than the Sense UI like many people claim either, anyone who isn't a retard should be able to use either without any trouble.
The reception issue (and yes, it is an issue) is really only a problem in poor reception areas, so if you are often in weak signal areas, the iPhone 4 is not a reliable phone unless you have a bumper on it, the bumpers are awful.
If you tend to have a decent signal where you are, you probably wont ever notice it, but its still a very poor show from Apple that they didn't address this problem.
I also think the iPhone 4 is overpriced, I understand (with all the Apple service you get that slightly beats HTC's) it being a bit more expensive, but £150-200 or more? I dont think so.
If someone said to me, you have to keep the iPhone 4 or the Desire for the next 5 years, it would be the Desire without a doubt.
The press event for it is on the 15th September.
The MP3 player is fine on the Desire, you will just need to get an SD card to store the music.

The sound quality is a close call but the interface of the iPod is certainly better.
I wish Google/HTC would pull their finger out and get a proper music application going for Android, they seem to underestimate the amount of people who double a phone up as an mp3 player!
