My dad has decided to give me £400 as a wee present and im pretty sure ill spend some of it on upgrades. My spec is as folows:

E6600
8800GTS 640
2 GIG Crucial Ram
and a decent mobo (Asus i think)

Now the GTS has served me well (although for a shorter lifetime than i anticipated) and still creams most anything on max settings albeit without all the candy turned on in Crysis but i will be getting rid in the very near future.

I assume a lot of you will tell me to get an 8800Gt and be done with it but..... is it worth sticking around for the new chips that are out soon?

Im still running XP but could easily get 4GB Ram and go Vista - is this recommended? (ive heard Vista is still a bit of a dog)

Either way, any reccomendations would be very much appreciated

Cheers

Wunz.

Sounds like that cash is burning a hole.

If youre running most games at max already Im not sure its worthwhile you changing anything at present, so wouldnt reccomend getting a GT at this stage.

What about getting a bigger/better screen, what do you have at the moment?

Also I dont see any need to touch Vista at present if XP is serving you well.

I agree, wait a bit. You still have a very capable system. I don't think the upgrade of GTS 640 to GT is really worth it. Perhaps wait until the 9 series cards have come out and price dropped a bit, then splash out.

hmmm thanks for the replies guys - ill stickw ith it then and try and spend the money more 'wisely' - perhaps get curries and chinese takeaways for a week- think of it..... ummmmmmmmmmmmmm

Seruiously though, ill probs get 4gb Ram and stick with that for the present - does XP recognise 4Gb or only 3Gb? I dont particularly want to go the way of vista just yet.

Ive got a nice 19" Asus Widescreen Flatscreen monitor atm - wont be chyanging that any time soon.

cheers

xp 64 bit will recognise the 4gb ram, but 32bit operating systems will only recognise upto 4gb of memory. so you;ll see 4gb of ram as about 3.25gb.

You might be lucky and sell the 8800 GTS 640MB for the cost of an 8800 GT new ;)

Other than that, there is a 32GB solid state sata drive which will give you (some) change from 400 notes.
