I'm indecisive choosing between the 5600x and 5800x.

I've been using a Ryzen 2600 since a few months ago when I sold my 3700x in anticipation of Zen 3. I've already gotten my refund for it from Amazon, just need to send it back before February.

I'd planned on buying a 5800x since it was revealed. I even upgraded to a Tomahawk X570. But I recently got my hands on a 3080 FTW3 Ultra, which I had prioritized over the CPU.

Now, I have like 2 weeks before I have to ship back my 2600 and I don't know which CPU to get.

Also, there is absolutely no way I can buy retail. Here in Vancouver, everything is out of stock perpetually. I'm looking at spending between $500-550 CAD for a 5600x, or like $820-850 for a 5800x, both from resellers.

I'm definitely the type of muppet who spends too much money on computer hardware. So, knowing that DDR5 probably means my motherboard/CPU will be replaced in like maximum 18 months, I'm not super worried about future proofing.

I play games on a 165hz 1440p monitor with the 3080.

I should also mention that I'm considering buying a 3600, which is about $310 CAD after taxes retail.

I've seen such disparity between reviews for these CPUs. Some benchmarks say there's a 10% difference between 3600 and 5600x, some say 40%. Since all I'm going to use the processor for is gaming, I'm having difficulty deciding.

Any suggestions would be welcomed, thanks.

Better to stick with the with 2600 for now save the pennies for DDR5 system, Dec this year? If you must swap out, go for the 3600 - see Hardware Unboxed video linked above.

That's the real challenge with the 5000 series. The performance jump over previous generations is too low to justify the current ~£300+ pricing in the mid range.

Personally I won't bother with the 5000 series until we get a 5600 chip in the £150-200 bracket.

I get the feeling AMD have deliberately inflated prices to push early adopters towards the 5800x and 5900x chips.

For me the exactly same question came down to how long do you intend to wait before upgrading again?

I upgrade my CPU and Motherboard once every 4-5 years. I bought a 6600k last time around and for the last year of use (1440p gaming @ 144hz) I had stuttering in all games I played purely due to CPU saturation. A 6700k would have likely given me a bit more headroom due to double the threads and might have got me through to DDR5 based platforms.

This time I decided to get a CPU that is more future proof, so went for the 5800X. It's a gut feel judgement that the 5800X will still be capable in gaming in 4 years, but I was certain the 5600X will be struggling.

Wow what games you running that you seem to be unsure the 2600 is a bottleneck. Get rid of it, it's a low cost low performance CPU, hell it even bottlenecks my GTX970 in my main game (ACC).

I'd probably agree with that given the specs of the ps5/xbox. 6 cores doesn't feel like a safe bet 3-4 years from now. For the price of the 5600x it's kind of a shame they didn't bump it up to an 8 core part IMO.

Guys, lol. The discussion has nothing to do with the 2600. Like I said, it is gone. I would never keep it considering the 3600 is like $70 CAD more. The question is between the 3600, 5600x, and 5800x.

I'm in agreeance that 6 cores is not going to be enough let's say, by the time the RTX 4000 series arrives. Considering that DDR5, new motherboard socket, CPU, and GPU will all release together, I'm not interested in future-proofing for 4 years.

I'm honestly leaning towards the 3600.

Completely agree that AMD could have dropped the MSRP of the 5800X to be a bit more inviting. Imagine the stock situation then though

I don't blame AMD for raising prices though. They have a competition stomper and are making hay while the sun shines, albeit without regressing to the pre-ryzen days of insane CPU pricing...

It seems a safe bet that prices for 5600X and 5800X are going to fall quite rapidly once the supply and demand situation is resolved. I mean 5800X is now £380 on OCUK!!!

I think the answer is simple, but a 3600X/3600 if you can get one cheap (<£200) otherwise buy a 5600X. Playing at 1440p means you'll see negligible performance between the 3600 and 5600, unless of course you're having true starvation issues. Upgrade when DDR5 platforms have become more mature than release day.

just get to 5600X as you say that you are not needing longevity as you will upgrade to DDR5 etc. If however you plan to keep your rig for 5 years or more then get the 5800X - but that's not you, and so the 5600X will be more than enough for gaming for 18 months. (I bought my son a 5900X for a build not to be upgraded for 8 yrs (apart from possibly the graphics card in say 5 or 6 yrs time)and I say - wow, its a great chip and totally overpowered for what he needs at the moment - but in say 7 yrs time I bet he will be glad he has it).

Hey, probably late to the party. But if I was a bit hard up on cash I'd get the 3600, if not then the 5600x.

I had the 3600 and upgraded to the 5800x and a 3080 at the same time, but I had saved £1500 for my CPU and GPU upgrades. Originally I wanted the 6900XT red devil LE.

As I installed the CPU and GPU at the same time I didn't see the difference with just the CPU. My old GPU was a 5700XT, so the uplift was very good after watching the HUB's video I wish I had got the 5600x IMO.

We live and we learn. I've wasted more money on cigs, alcohol and sniff in my past so not too bothered about wasting it on PC hardware.

5600x is $500-550 CAD from resellers. 3600 is $310 after tax retail. That's between 61-77% more money for 5600x. For what seems to be a 5% average gain at 1440p high settings with my 3080...I'd need some explanation on why people are suggesting it. Is there something I'm missing?

I'd go with the 3600 for gaming. You won't feel the difference and if you're not a pro it won't matter. You can then look at 2nd gen DDR5, I'd avoid first gen for the usual reasons. There's a lot of min/maxers here and they spend a lot of money on their hobby, understandably. If you just want to game I'd say mid range and change more frequently is the way to go. I'm leaning that way despite not practicing what I preach with my current set up!
