...at 3pm this afternoon I'll be having IV Sedation for a Wisdom Tooth Extraction.

I'm not in any pain or discomfort atm, but if I don't have it taken out now, in a few years time things could get really bad.

This isn't mine (mine is actually worse)...

...but I'm not looking forward to it one little bit.

I've never had sedation before, but I understand that I'll be awake, but I'll have no idea what's going on. I'll be able to respond and move, but I'll have no memory of any of it when the drugs wear off.

Anyone else been through this? I haven't booked any time off, am I going to look I've done one round with Tyson? :(

yes you will look like you've done a round with mike tyson everyone i know who had then taken out have came out with a swollen mouth. it is pretty brutal when they remove them lots of yanking and pulling i've got 1 come through hasnt hurt so not even seen dentist about it should really.

watch out for infection - seems to be quite prone to infection and the resulting cysts are very nasty.

Good Luck.

Definately book a couple of days off work !

My face was very swollen after one of my wisdoms was removed, i made the mistake of working whilst feeling crap and ended up making mistakes.

I had a filling on friday... the tooth itself never hurt now I'm in pain!

According to the dentist I've had the hole there for a good two years and getting bigger. I not had a filling since I was 12 years old... I brush my teeth on average 3 times a day and use two differnet type of toothbrush and two tooth paste- as I'm a smoker; with going to the dentist every 3 months.... so my teeth are in very good order. Is it meant to hurt after? is so for how long?

I question the need to drill a bigger hole and cause me pain to fill up a tiny hole that was not hurting and was only getting bigger as he was poking at it each time I saw him...

Good luck with your teeth..

From my experience(lots of it with dentists) it shouldnt be overly sore. Its sore when your vision goes blurry during the drilling and your mouth is numb for an hour and a half or so after it. After that i eat and drink without touching that tooth and its all fine after that.

Aparently food goes down between the two teeth, which doesn't get removed by brushing. After a while it just goes manky and you end up with two rotten teeth and a lot of pain.

I'm not looking forward to it, but I'd rather have it now than in a year of so when the whole tooth/area is sore and infected.

I was extremely lucky. All four wisdom teeth were up by the time I was 18. The only pain I get is from the flaps of gum still left on top of them that hurt from time to time.

Good luck with the op. I've been under general anasthetic before to get a cyst removed. That was grand, woke up feeling like I had a very good sleep and couldn't move for about half an hour. Weird feeling but not that bad. You better expect some serious jelly muscles for a couple of hours though.

Similar problem here atm, on a waiting list for the pull, but I'll be opting for a full sedation, I pass out at the sight of any sort of dental equipment.

Its not sore and its not really hurting me that much, the densist didn't even need to numb my mouth when drilling... it was that much of a small hole... I just have is tickly feeling in the tooth all the time. people at work says its can be normal for a week or two... I'm just acting like a big girl.

Why dont you go for a general anaesthetic? Ive had tooth out under this: it was great. quick jab in the hand count to 5 Zzzzzzz...... then wake up and have a nice kip at home.

Also had another out where the tooth area was numbed and the dentist struggled holding my mouth and pliers prying away at it for ages....... :/

I was'nt offered a general anaesthetic... :D , for what I googled.... "The nerve of the tooth can be stressed, due to a particularly large or deep filling and the possible exposure to bacteria. A 'high' filling will result in the tooth hitting first and having a lot of unusual force being placed on it causing a traumatic injury to the nerve of the tooth making the tooth sensitive when chewing or with cold. If a pin was placed in the tooth, it may be near the nerve and cause pain. Probably 50% of people report sensitivity to cold after having their teeth worked on. After one week, that number is probably reduced to about 38%."

I guess my tooth just sensitivity at the moment... £70 pounds for this pain...

Just to let you all know, Im back home now all sorted. I'm not in any pain now and haven't been the whole time.

They sat me in the chair, showed me the xray and then the usual "there are small risks" talk. Then they stuck a IV Drip line in my hand the gave me three doses of some drug. I could feel the drugs go up my arm the by the time I looked round to my mum who came to escort me home I was out like a light. I don't remember the rest. I woke up about 30mins later feeling great but with a big wedge of cotton wool in my mouth.

I still feel very numb now, but I imagine that'll ease off soon and the pain will begin. I've been given some wicked painkilers (codine) and some other bits too. But all in all, it sounds FAR worse than it actually was.

Ouch....not even the painkillers the dentist gave can fully suppress the pain :|

It's got a inch long line of stiches in my mouth along with a hole where the tooth was.

can't eat anything atm. Too painful.

Funny I should be reading this thread.

Waiting for my 7am taxi to Gateshead Queen Elizabeth Hospital, for remove of two wisdom teeth, by general anaesthetic.:o

Luckily I've had it before, so stocked up on Neurofen and slow-release painkillers. :D

How do they decide whether the wisdom teeth need removing or not? I've got one just coming through and another fully impacted that will never see the light of day and a dentist appointment next week. Thing I'm most concerned about is that I've just had £2k worth of orthodontist work done and these wisdom teeth are going to screw it all up.
